I installed windows for workgroups 3.11 on my computer but i used a windows 98 start up disk. sometime during the setup before it copied all the files it said it couldn't modify the config.sys and autoexec.bat files. It said i would have to do that myfelf when the setup completed. What am I supposed to modify? how do I get Windows 3.11 working? I'd really appreciate some help. thanks. also I tried some stuff but it didn't work then it told me to put the windows 3.11 start up disk in. I don't have one.

The DOS on the win98 disk isn't compatible (without perhaps a patch) with win311. You need to first install an older version such as DOS6.22, then install win311 afterwards.

using a bootdisk to install Win3.x will not make ur system bootable...

u have a couple of options here:

Option #1: transfer the system files from ur Win98 BootDisk using the command
A:\SYS C:
then click HERE & download the file 3XSTART.EXE which will patch one of ur system files (i believe the IO.SYS) to allow Win3.xx to run on DOS 7.xx

Option #2: download a DOS 6.22 BootDisk & use that to start ur system...OR...transfer the system files using the command
A:\SYS C:

Option #3: install a full version of DOS 6.22 (or whatever version of DOS u prefer)...

whichever way u choose to go there will be NO need to reinstall WFW 3.11...

setup should have created a file named CONFIG.WIN & a file named AUTOEXEC.WIN which will be located in the C:\WINDOWS directory...

rename these files to:
CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT then move them to the root directory C:\...
reeboot ur system & there u go...

if windows does not start up automatically then type WIN at the C:\ prompt

if u want Windows to start up automatically then add the line WIN at the end of ur AUTOEXEC.BAT file...

HTH...
