If you look further (Disk Op. System), you'll still find people using DOS 6.x. It boots up faster than windows for a start. A 32Mb 100MHz DOS box will boot up faster than a 2Gb 3GHz Windows XP box.
i have one good desktop and a laptop but still have 3 old computers .. i play with the when i don't have what to do .. and what's more intresting it's that they are history . comm'on .. it's nothing special to install win xp and browse the web ... you have all that you need and work without a problem.. but to install win 3.11 and search 2 weeks for updates and drivers and old programs .. and some of them .. have errors .. you have to find solutions .. ( reading forums for solving problems ) but finaly ( ping www.yahoo.com form win 3.11 and .. .. yes .. reply ) or editing photos .. or Listen mp3 ( yes .. i wrote mp3 , viewing pdf's , editing word 97-2003 .doc documents .. and other stuff .. all that on a 3.11 :D
I use windows 3.11 for fun. Like old times, even though i dont know what "old times" was like as i was born in 1991! 3.1 is much more exciting than any old xp. first off, its the fact that its one of the earliest kind of os with internet. Second, i just like old stuff, i like how sound cards (SB) were 3 times the size of a graphics card now.
I found it like a project, first internet, then word, then games on dos and win31 games. Basically, you can do everything you can do now on win31, except in a much smaller perspective. :D and the excitement that you get the cd driver set up correctly in dos :D
i baught a Windows 3.1 (not WFW)on ebay, shrinkwrapped with dos6. until i baught a wfw311 specially for internet, plus, if you have the right driver for an older graphics card in win31 you can still have as many colours as a modern day machine, my win31 machine can get 3 million colours via the driver :D Lovely colours :D
Windows 3.1x and DOS combinations on old machines are always fun to work with. I have an old p133 Compaq Laptop that dual-boots Win 95 and 3.11 WFWG on two seperate partitions.
I have lots of old DOS games which prefer the true 16bit environment to run in. Compaq is very good at keeping an archive of it's old 3.1x drivers fortunatly.
I agree with people that liked the old Creative Labs Sound-Blaster 16. It is a fantastic card for it's age and has a great midi soundbank. Good midi support is so essential if you want to run old DOS games.
