My mate Pamela uses her old computer for word processing. When she turned it on a few days ago it came up with the message "Operating system missing." From that point we can't move the cursor, so can't get to a prompt to examine the problem or to reinstall Windows 3.11 from disks. Has anyone a fix for this, or some idea how we can get to a prompt? It's a good old computer and we don't just want to dump it! Thanks everyone!
James

Windows 3.11 is not an operating system, it is a shell or GUI (graphical user interface.) DOS is the actual operating system used. If you know precisely which version of DOS is on her system and you have a DOS boot disk for that version I suggest you boot from that bootdisk and at the command prompt type "sys c:" that will reinstall the three core operating system files and probably fix the problem.

You might want to check the IDE cables before you do anything. The hard drive might've come unplugged.
