Comment: My mate Pamela uses her old computer for word processing. When she turned it on a few days ago it came up with the message "Operating system missing." From that point we can't move the cursor, so can't get to a prompt to examine the problem or to reinstall Windows 3.11 from disks. Has anyone a fix for this, or some idea how we can get to a prompt? It's a good old computer and we don't just want to dump it! Thanks everyone! James

Reply: (edit)Windows 3.11 is not an operating system, it is a shell or GUI (graphical user interface.) DOS is the actual operating system used. If you know precisely which version of DOS is on her system and you have a DOS boot disk for that version I suggest you boot from that bootdisk and at the command prompt type "sys c:" that will reinstall the three core operating system files and probably fix the problem.

Reply: (edit)You might want to check the IDE cables before you do anything. The hard drive might've come unplugged.
