OS: Windows 3.1
CPU/Ram: fsfd
Comment:

I installed Windows 3.1 on a computer with 2 partitions one has Windows Xp and the other has Window 3.1 I used the MS-DOS disk that I created from Windows Xp and when I run the win file it says that this version of DOS is not compadable and it also says to use a Windows 3.1 boot disk and I can't make one because I can run Windows 3.1. How to I get Windows 3.1 to work?

"it also says to use a Windows 3.1 boot disk"

I doubt very much if that is the message - - there is no such thing.

Win3xx was designed to run from a DOS operating system - you might try a DOS6xx bootdisk, but those are only aware of FAT16 partitions. You can use Win98 DOS, but a patch must be applied.

Thing is, to run the older software, you have to know a thing or two on how things work

You probably should use DOS 5.0 or 6.22

Forget about win31 for the time being..what you want on that partition is dos..once you get a C:> prompt you can start up windows 31..depending on which kind of dos 6 or 7.1 etc..) you may or may not need a patch..but that's not immediately important.
Follow up on the liks supplied above and concentrate on getting a booting dos partition first..

Obviously, i think i believe you think i said what you want to believe, but i think you didn't believe what i think i really said...

MS_DOS 6 and compatible needs to be ideally installed on the C: partition, as it will not install on D:........

The easieat solution is to use a Boot Manger:

FYI "The create an MS-DOS startup disk" option in Windows XP uses files based on the version of the DOS SubSystem in Windows Millenium Edition, and was included mainly to allow BIOS Flashing, hence it is very very very limited in its capibilities.

.. well, surprisingly, I don't see it either. I know reading skills are rapidly becoming a thing of the past, but surely you yourself can tell if a filename is mentioned or not.

That file is related to long file name support, and not a 'normal' part of DOS or Windows, but no doubt has to do with the "DOS7" download you've installed (aka "Wengier DOS")

I'd like to stick around and continue to search Google for you, but I'm busier than I'd like to be. Someone else may be along.

As mentioned ad nauseum, DOS 7 will cause problems.

It just did.

If you want to get w3x working, format with DOS 5 or 6.22. Do not drvspace.

Then install w3x.

Wengier dos 7.1 can be used to run Windows 3.1 but dos 8.1 from Windows ME as supplied by XP won't do it.Good luck.

Maybe adding the line "emmexclude=C400-C7FF" in 386Enh section of your system.ini may help. If not try using the default VGA driver or the SVGA driver that comes with WfW 3.11 (and can be found by searching through this forum), patched, if necessary.
NOTE: The patch for the SVGA driver can be found in a thread newer than this in the forum...

Try downloading the svga drivers that come with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and patching it with the patch presented in one other post here in the forum. This may let you use 256 colors in a resolution up to 1024x728 if your card is VESA compilant
