the file is in win 3.1

if you plan on using it with win 2000, it won't work.
its 16 bit, win2k is 32 bit.
win2k is ntfs, win 3.1 is fat16.
the 2 won't 'read' each others files

Maybe he has Win2K formatted as FAT32. Out of curiosity, I copied Recorder.exe, Recorder.dll and Recorder.hlp from Win 3.1 to Win 95, it works fine. I am going to email them to myself at work and see what happens in Win 2K (FAT32).

may work... but 32 bit vs 16 bit and fat vs ntfs has nothign to do with coping the file... i've used paint brush from 3.1 in XP before but in didn't quite work the same so be prepared for that
