Comment:

I'm trying to reinstall win 3.1 on my system
but I can't get it to recognize the cdrom or
even that there is one installed. Think I
might need the driver for oak technology-910
cdrom. Or could there be another reason it
is not recognizing the D drive?

Thanks
Sharon

Is your CD-ROM an "IDE" or "Proprietry" (sp?) drive? ie; Does it run off of a sound card or SCSI card, or does it have a jumper to set it as "MASTER" or "SLAVE"? Any drivers required for DOS can be found in a multitude of places.

Yes, i'm sure the guy above is making perfect sense, and i mean it, but i'll try and make it easier. Is the CD-Rom and internal CD Rom?
If it is then it is "ide". Make sure the bios know you have a cd rom, it probably does!
Ok, the yes, as you suggested you need to reinstall the original driver that went with that drive, if the disk is corrupted, lost, or you didn't inherit one, then yes there is a little trouble. You should be able to download a universal cd rom driver from the net. Try to get hold of as much techie stuff as you can about your cd rom, because there are probably a lot of drivers out of there, some better than others, maybe even your original is out there somewhere. When you have it, whack the disk in the drive in dos mode, and type install. Make backup copies of the dos registry before you begin.
I have an installation disk for a cd rom drive somewhere, i'll download it to you if you email me, of course i can't guarantee it will be much good. Basically all drivers should work for your device, but any enhanced features won't work if the manufacturer's drivers aren't used.

To David Peabrain!
Internal CD-ROMs are not all IDE you TURKEY
They can also be SCSI or Proprietry (Meaning they run off their own control card or via a sound card)And what is a DOS Registry? (We are talking simple MS-DOS here are we?) The only files you need to backup with DOS are autoexec.bat & config.sys and a simple printout is all you normaly need anyway (Just so you know which lines were added later)

Goto mick c's excellant powerload site at www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk and have a look at his CD-ROM page. He has the Oak Technoligy Universal Driver, which should be what you want. (Its more than likly a IDE drive anyway)In fact micks pages answer almost half of all the DOS & 3.1 problems posted here.
