oh my, don't we all love these essay questions! LOL. well it depends on who you ask. many people consider windows 3.1 to be "ancient, simple, unattractive" or the like. others of us (like me), enjoy it because it's not as cluttered up as windows 95 or 98. there's still lots of support out there for windows 3.1, even though microsoft has pretty much pulled the plug on the poor little OS!
it's great for older computers, like 286's, 386's & 486's, as it doesn't require many resources. it does have the infamous "GPF (general protection fault) error", but there are ways to keep it to a minimum. windows 95 & 98 have their infamous "invalid page fault" and the "blue screen of death". so microsoft isn't perfect; they toss us consumers, products that are still in their alpha- and beta- stages, and expect us to work out the bugs. sheesh.
but dont' get me ranting! so if you're asking me - i like windows 3.1. i consider it a challenge to keep it up to reasonable operating standards (to run some of the newer software). i also like tinkering with older computers, so it's great for that purpose too.
james

does anyone know where windows 3.x stores initialization files,in the ini files alone or it includes the registry also.

Chad: HOMEWORK is for You.
james: Dont help to much.

As for Windows 3.1 being ancient james. I drive a 6 year old Ford, I do not consider it past it. But had it be a 'Microsoft' Ford I would have had to have changed it at least 5 times due to the lack of parts!

Darn Right!!! And I get more enjoyment out of my 1927 Orthophonic Victrola than I do from my CD player.
(Don't know what an Orthophonic Victrola is? Then, check out this site:
http://www.garlic.com/~tgracyk/credenza.htm)Back to the original question, Win 3.1 worked fine for its time, but it could only generate bland looking General Protection Fault error messages. So, Microsoft introduced Windows 95 which gave users General Protection errors and lockups, AS WELL AS blue screen Illegal Operation error messages. Windows 98 expanded that by adding a host of undreamed of error messages, as well as spontaneous reboots and total system freezes. Windows ME provides even more error messages!
Of course, in order to contain the database for all of these error messages, the newer software takes up far more disk space than Windows 3.1, but that's the price of progress...
