I've been trying to find out some information about Windows 3.0 Multimedia (there is very little info on the net). I believe it only came in OEM versions, never released as a retail product.

I have found out that it was released in Oct. 1991 and was available for about 6 months until W3.1 came out.

(There were 3 versions of windows 3.0: the original, Windows 3.0a and lastly 3.0 multimedia.)

I don't know if the (OEM?) disks actually had 'multimedia' printed on them or ? Also, I don't know what version # is shown in the 'about' screen.

Have also been told there was a multimedia exetnsions 'upgrade' available, to convert 'plain' W 3.0 to 'Multimedia'.

I am trying to find out more info about this as I hope someday to find a copy.

(Win 3.0 MM certainly has to be one of the rarest versions of Windows.)

hi kevin, another fellow windows 3.0 adventurer! i've run across the same problem; can't seem to find any support for it.

be sure to check out the above link; the site claims to be the largest for windows 3.0 files. it's very organized & easy to naviagate (and informative).

would be interested in hearing from you if you come up with anything.

i myself have been looking for web browsers that run under windows 3.0 (not DOS), but haven't come up with anything as of yet.

As far as I can remember, Windows 3.0 with Multimedia was a 'Standard' copy of Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions Version 1.0 supplied as a Supplimental Disk Set. The one and only copy I ever saw was anyway. The main disks were not marked in ant special way, with the 2 or 3 extra disks marked as above! When the MM setup was run it changed the splash screen to read something like "Windows with Mulimedia Extensions Version 1.0"

hope this helps.

Thanks TechGUY for your help! I think I stand a better chance of finding it if I know exactly what to look for.

I'm thinking it's likely you are right, that it only came as a suppliment to Win 3.0. That's why nobody seems to even remember a special, seperate version of W3.0MM, much less actually have one.

Sorry I had not finished!

Above is extract from:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q32/9/05.ASP?LN=EN-GB&SD=gn&FR=0

From the above spec, plus what I have read above, It would seem likley that Multimedia Extensions is just that, a add-on program supplied with Windows 3.0 by OEM

I have never seen this version myself, But would like to see a copy!

I just found a Microsoft page that shows the 'Read Me' file from 'Microsoft Windows with Multimedia extensions 1.0'. What is interesting is the information it gives about how ME 1.0 loads Himem.sys and the associated A20 handler. Some of the listed handlers are for 'IBM AT' and a 'Wyse 12.5 mhz. 286'. So it seems that MM 3.0 would run on a 286, according to the readme file that is included with the product.

It never made sense to me that Win 3.0MM min. requirement was a 386 PC, while Win 3.1 min. requirement was a 286 PC! From the Microsoft page, it seems that that 3.0MM would run on a 286.

Perhaps M$ was just being over-cautious, and thinking that a 'mutimedia PC' needed all the processing power, at the time, that it could use.

Unfortunately, since it also needs himem.sys, it will not run on an XT, the way 'plain' Win 3.0\3.0a will.

For anybody who is interested, here is a link to an excellent article written on Windows 3.0 and particularly, running Windows 3.0 on an XT. You won't find any better information anywhere else on the www. This was written by a British man and posted on an 'XT' computer forum earlier this year.
The website where it is now posted is not by the original author, but somebody who just "borrowed" it (without the author's knowledge) for use on their website.

Did he post a 'disclaimer' stating this? Well, I don't know since the rest of his site is in German!

But it is an excellent article and deserves to be preserved somewhere on the 'net.

(The information on Windows 3.0MM is limited and subject to revision, since nobody seems to know much about it)

To Kevin and anyone else who is interested.

I think I may have located a copy of Multimedia Extension Version 1.0 Its on a IBM Install CD-ROM I 'Gave away' 2 years ago, that I should have back next week. Its an IBM OS/2 and Windows 3.1 Option Disk. As to why it had MM on it as well I do not know. I have only been reminded of the fact today! So I have still to check it out further. e-mail your address as well as posting here if you are still interested, and if it is indeed MM, and still reads, I will look to posting it somwhere.

The original minimum specifications for a computer to be labeled "MPC" was a 286 but it was changed to a 386 so that is why a 386 is "required" for the Multimedia Extensions. OEM's couldn't call it an official Multimedia PC (MPC) if it had a 286 and the Multimedia Extensions were meant for Multimedia PC's.
