Two things you can try:

1) Download SHARE.exe from Office 4x
(On my 3x page)but this does not seem to like
   MS-DOS 7.10

or

2) Open your word processor, Then save empty file
   as SHARE.TXT - Then rename it SHARE.exe

It seems that Office (Word & Excel) do not seem to mind!

Mick C's first way won't work; and the second way is sort of risky.

MaGula,

Just download and install MS-DOS 7.10 from MS-DOS 7.10 Full Installation Set as normal. ROM-DOS's SHARE.exe is already included in MS-DOS 7.10 Full Installation Set and is loaded automatically by default after DOS installation. So you don't need to worry about this at all!

P.S. SHARE is automatically loaded by MS-DOS 7.10 Installer by default and can be unloaded at any time by its "/u" switch. Also, if you don't want it to be loaded when DOS starts, simply uncheck the "SHARE (File-sharing and locking capabilities)" checkbox while installing MS-DOS 7.10. Unlike SHARE.exe from Office 4.x, this SHARE, as included in MS-DOS 7.10 Full Installatoin Set, provides real file-sharing function with FAT32 and LFN support.

Do not just take my word for it - Read Microsoft's own Knowledge Base article ~

I am sure ROM-DOS SHARE.exe works very well anyway.

MS-DOS 7.10 was never intended to be a 'standalone version' only the underlying DOS for Windows 95B/98/98se. Hence having to use ROM-DOS Share.exe in the MS-DOS 7.10 Completion!

MS KB says, "In order to support the FAT32 file system, Share.exe support has been disabled ..."

Well, the support for SHARE.exe from Office 4.x and older versions of DOS should been disabled in order to support FAT32 drives and LFN (Lone File Names), otherwise the old versions of SHARE.exe could cause data corruption while sharing files in DOS, no matter what version of DOS it is. The best solution (the ultimate solution) is to use the updated version of SHARE.exe which support FAT32 drives and LFN, as the one included in the MS-DOS 7.10 Full Installation Set.

Incidentally, as we know, in the presence of MS-DOS 7.10 Full Installation Set, MS-DOS 7.10 is virtually a full-featured standalone and complete version of DOS, with many useful features. Despite what MS say to the public, like Win3.x, Win9x (4.x) is not an OS at all! Actually, you can run almost any DOS-based version of Windows (2.x/3.x/95/95A/95B/98/98SE) GUI from MS-DOS 7.10. It does not work. The MSKB 161619 is for those user who using Office 4.3 under Windows Me/98/95 to cheat Office that share was installed. However, it is not applicable for Office 4.3 under Windows 3.1 + DOS7.1 with FAT32.

I have the same problem before. The only way to force Office run under Windows 3.1 + DOS7.1 with FAT32 is to install the other file such "noshare.com" or "sharemu.com" instead of "share.exe" from MS-DOS 7.0 or before.

OK by me, I have never tried this with MS-DOS 7.10 only within Windows 98. I hope MaGula comes back and tells use which worked for him?

fungko,

I used to suggest sharemu.com on my website (I'm sure fungko have read my old Chinese article about this), but NOT now! sharemu.com or the "trick" suggested in MS KB both lack of *real* file-sharing support thus should NOT be recommanded even if it does "seem" to work (sort of risky). Just use the real one included in the MS-DOS 7.10 Full Installation Set, which should solve all the problem!

Unless you are connected to a network 'real' file sharing should not be an issue! It is only because Office 4x insists on share.exe being loaded in the first place that most users would even think about it!

Office 4x was designed to be used with MS-DOS 6x and its version of share and Windows 3.1x & WfWG 3.1x and not MS-DOS 7.10 which I repeat was never intended to be a 'standalone' version however good it is at being one.

Do not be so defensive Wengier about 7.10 You have done a good job in converting it into what Microsoft should have done themselves. Yes we will have problems it, but none I hopw that cannot be solved.

OK, that's true (BTW: I felt disabling for old share support was necessary because of the FAT32 & LFN support, so I never tried to remove that block code in the DOS kernel).

I think Magula must have read the following thread before posting this topic:

http://www.computing.net/windows31/wwwboard/forum/10646.html

That's why he was trying to find ROM-DOS 7.10's SHARE, which was later included in MS-DOS 7.10 Full Installation Set. Note: my name was never mentioned in the recent versions of the install set. All it says is:

"This distribution is made in the hope that it will be useful.
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1981-1999."

And so on.

Some screenshots for MS-DOS 7.10 are available from this page:

A while back I ran Windows 3.1 on Windows 98's DOS 7.1 (Win98 was the system's main OS), and I used a program that I think was called "fakeshar.com". Never had any problems running Word 6 after I started using that. I think I may still have it around here somewhere, not totally sure, I'll look around. Fungko mentioned "noshare.com" and "sharemu.com", I'd assume those are basically the same type of thing.

PC Freak,

sharemu.com (Share Emulator) is actually a RENAMED version of fakeshar.com -- renamed and made available for download by me in the past.

OK. While Sharemu/Fakeshar and the MS KB's "trick" actually don't work with many programs (for example, Fakeshar can only "fool" Win3.x programs, not many pure DOS programs; MS KB's "trick" can only "fool" certain programs), and both lack of real file-sharing support (networking is still important and should not be ignored by the way), ROM-DOS 7.10's SHARE, as already included in the MS-DOS 7.10 Installation Set (see my Response #3 and the other thread), is definitely the best SHARE program which provides true file-sharing capacities with full FAT32 and LFN support, thus it's the simplest and in fact the final solution.

Do you have that version of SHARE around for download aside from being included in your DOS 7.1? The reason I ask is because it would be useful for some people who are not planning to install a standalone version of DOS. I'm not sure what MaGula's setup is, but for example, if someone were planning to use Windows 3.1 on a Windows 98 system's built-in DOS, after using 3xStart (as I have done in the past), instead of installing Win 3.1+DOS separately.

I will add it to my PowerLoad DOS Resource Page for download later today, since it seems that this is the best solution for those who need it, and as you say PC Freak not everyone wants to install the 'Full Version'

OK. I just uploaded that SHARE again:

P.S. I have confirmed that MS KB's "trick" can't "fool" Office 4.x as well as most other programs.

Mick C,

I have already noticed that. So I deleted my uploaded file just before your response.

But, please change "ROM-DOS 7.0" to "ROM-DOS 7.10" on your site. There is no such thing as "ROM-DOS 7.0" at all!

Totally no idea what you are talking about, and not sure what file you have used. I can say Win/WFW 3.11 networking has worked just fine on my systems for quite a long time.

MaGula:
What a networked application are you trying to share?

Wengier:
The application that I want to use over a network is written in multi-user FoxPlus 2.01. If it is started in DOS6.x with SHARE not loaded, It will infinitely loop as it tries to lock files/records as it starts up. I have not tried you MS-DOS 7.1, as I have not a chance to create a network to test. Also what network drivers would I use.

The network drivers provided by WFW 3.11 and MSCLIENT 3.0 + Win3.x, which are the ones I'm currently using, both work perfectly. I also tried many others and haven't found any network driver that doesn't work with SHARE so far. But if any, please let me know.
