OS: Win 3.1
CPU/Ram: 500mb/8mb
Model/Manufacturer: IBM

Alright, I removed the addition memory that I added to my IBM and the phdisk problems stopped when i rebooted the machine with no memory installed. I reinstalled the memory and it only reads it partially (7,000 as compared to 23,000 Kb).

What I would like to do is post my TSR/MSD page and someone give me some tweaks that I can add to make the IBm run as well as possible

HIMEM 752 XMSXXXX0
POWER 5344 POWER$
SMARTDRV 2464 _doubleB
file handles 0466
FCBS 256
BUFFERS 512
DIRECTORIES 448
Default Handlers 3008
System code 64
COMMAND.COM 256
Free Memory 96
SMARTDRV.EXE 28304
MSD.EXE

any help would be appreciated, I know there is a BUFFERS tweak out there and maybe adding something to CONFIG.SYS.

Sorry for being a pain, everytime i think the IBM is dead and finished, it is normally something simple that my inexperience mistakes for being fatal. and the book that I bought doesn't go into things such as doing this.

My config.sys files are

FILES=30
BUFFERS=10
DOS=HIGH
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DEVICE=C:\DOS\POWER.EXE
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRIV.EXE /DOUBLE_BUFFER
STACKS=9,256

AUTOEXEC>BAT
C;\windows\esscfg.exe /A:220 /I:7 /D:1
c:\windows\essvol.exe /V:8 /L:8 /W:8 /M:0 /C:8 /S:8 /A:8
C:\teac\nscdex.exe /D: TEAC-CDI /M:15
C:\windows\smartdrv.exe
@ECHO OFF

Set Path=C:\windows;c:\dos;%PATH%
Set Temp=C:\DOS
C:\DOS\Mouse.com
C:\Dos\Doskey.com

"The Ultimate Windows 3.1" book doesn't really cover editing any lines on either of these two settings.

It's hard to know where to begin

"I reinstalled the memory and it only reads it partially (7,000 as compared to 23,000 Kb)."

?? - - nevermind. You'll go far using flakey RAM

Your questions seem to concern DOS, so that may explain why the Windows book is of dubious value

I would suggest you undertake a more satisfying pursuit - computers really aren't your "thing" (if you know what I mean - and I think that you do)

Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie!'... till you can find a rock

As someone pointed out to me, "Win 3.1 is only a GUI on top of DOS......"

And believe it or not, trying to get the IBM up and running is satsifying purely for the fact that it hasn't quit on me yet, I've quit on it several times and it just won't roll over so neither will I.

The POST test used to read 23,xxx in memory now it only reads 7,xxx instead. But the "save to disk/restoring from disk" PHDISK function has stopped and the laptop boots up noramally now.

Thanks for the advice though.

BTWsimply checking to see that the memory was seated snugly solved the problem.
