I'm a true novice! I'm trying to start up a WIN 3.1 system that's giving me an error "missing operating system". I tried downloaded a DOS620.exe file to boot the system, however, once I put the floppy in gives me a message about corrupted files. Can someone advise me on what to try

not to hard to fix! If u had any dos verson 6&under, it will work fine. U should type @prompt sys c:
If it worked, u might have to change dir @prompt to windows then type win!(to start windows!).

Have you tried Dos 6.22?

(requires 3 Disks)
http://acts.poly.edu/~chlam/Download/MSDOS622

Instructions:

1. Download the zip files to your desktop.

2. Open each zip file using a decompression tool such as WinZip 8.1, and extract contents to seperate disks (zip file 1 goes to disk 1, zip file 2 goes to disk 2, zip file 3 goes to disk 3.)

3. Get a fourth disk and *COPY* not move io.sys, msdos.sys, and command.com to a fourth disk.

4. Set io.sys and msdos.sys as hidden system files, (this will be your boot disk).

5. Write protect your newly created disk.

6. Start system you want to rebiuld with your DOS 6.22 boot disk.

7. Once booted up, type "fdisk" (no quotes).

8. Delete all of the expanded/extended patitions on your hard drive (if there are any).

9. Delete primary DOS partition on your hard disk.

10. Set up a new DOS logical partition (I would suggjest using all of your hard drive for this).

11. Exit fdisk.

12. Type "fdisk /mbr

13. Copy contents of disks 1-3 to your hard drive.

14. You now have DOS installed.

15. Remove all disks from floppy drive(s) and restart your system from hard disk (normal boot)

16. Install your desired GUI
