Hello,
I have been trying to install windows 3.1 for quite a while now, and nothing seems to be working >:( So, I was hoping that if anyone had win3.1 installed in their pc if they could just email me the whole content of their C drive? I don't care about the software- just the OS. Oh and which FAT it should be on (i.e. fat, fat12, fat16, etc.)
Cheers

DOS is the operating system. Windows 3.1 is a "graphic user interface" that's installed after DOS is up and running.
DOS runs on FAT16, therefore Win 3.1 also runs on FAT16.

Definitely illegal. Not exactly impossible, but pretty close to
it. If you WERE able to find someone to do it for you, you
would have to manually edit the registry and point to all of
the system files and properties, and with enough dedication
you would get it to boot. However, you wont find anyone to
do it here, because it is illegal, and pointless. This IS a tech support forum for windows 3.1 though, and we
will be glad to assist you with technical problems. You say
nothing seems to be working, can you be more specific?
When did you try to install it (windows)? And what version of
Ms-Dos is on that computer, and is IT (dos) functioning?Matthew R. Keegan

Same here...
But, latest versions of Win 3.1 had a one time option to convert everything over to a 32 bit system also. Make it in line with the Win 95 and Win 98 boys in the future.
Never heard of the 12 bit system. Not to say it could not have been out there, but we had 8 bit on our older 286's and 386 computers.

>>>"But, latest versions of Win 3.1 had a one time option to convert everything over to a 32 bit system also."<<<
That was merely the 32-bit extensions (a.k.a. Win32s) which were added on to Win3.1 to allow "some" 32-bit programs to run. Little to do with the OP's issue.
>>>"Never heard of the 12 bit system."<<<
Never was one (at least as far as hardware is concerned). The OP mentioned FAT12, which was designed for floppies and HDD's under 32MB:

If the OP is still monitoring this thread, I'd suggest the following:
Obtain a legit set of DOS and Win3.1 disks.
FDISK and reformat the drive (assuming it's not sharing another OS) with disk 1 of the set of DOS disks.
Install DOS, then install Win3.1, using the "default" options.
Add drivers for sound, video, etc.
All "should be" well afterwards...
