Trying to install mitsumi ide cd-rom drive into a 386 system.
Ran a mitsumi cd-rom diagnostic pgm which tested ok. (open door,start cd, seek,etc.)
Can't seem to load drivers.
I do not have MSCDEX in the system. Is this why I cannot load the drivers ?
(386, 20MB RAM, CD ROM DAISY-CHAINED ON IDE CABLE AFTER H.D.D.and jumper set as SLAVE.
Win 3.11 does not "SEE" CD-ROM DRIVE. Help- please !!

First, yes, you do need mscdex.exe (or an alternative program to do the same thing). It should be found in the C:\DOS directory. It should be loaded in autoexec.bat as follows:

LH c:\dos\MSCDEX.EXE /d:[driver name]

It will only work if the driver indicated by [driver name] was successfully loaded in config.sys. This should be done as follows:

DEVICE=C:\[driver directory]\[driver filename]/D:[driver name]

Your driver may require certain options, lika a port value, etc. The [driver name] that you assign in config.sys must match the one you specify in autoexec.bat.

Second, if you are using it on your primary (or only) IDE port, be sure that you set the jumper on the back of the CD Drive as SLave. It's usually set to MAster when you buy it.
