Subject: win 3.1 won't start after install

Comment: Hi all, I have just put my old 486 back together and am in the process of reinstalling windows 3.1 on it. The setup runs fine on it, finishes with disk 2 (of 7) and then says 'please wait while windows is loaded. you may continue to setup when windows appears' then it just hangs, and it has the c:\windows prompt there but even if i type 'win' to get it to start manyually, i get the 'bad command or file name' message. what is going on here? i thought it was supposed to install all 7 disks from dos and then load windows? i have deleted the previous installation of windows 3.11 before attempting to install. i also have a dos menu program running which it is supposed to boot to before loading windows so you can choose whether to load windows or work in dos. is this the possible cause of the problem, perhaps an autoexec.bat problem that needs to be fixed? thanks in advance, marbs

Reply: (edit)Hi Marbs, I recommend formatting your hard drive to remove all files and settings and reinstalling. But first try to get a new set of Win 3.1 disks just to be sure.

Reply: (edit)Hi Marbs: If you install DOS 6.22 use the scandisk utility (c:\sacndisk)to check hard drive, you might have some bad sectors that when data is written to it can't be read back. Good luck. Z
