Hi Doc:
I think that the main problem you will have is that that your hard drive is small, if you install Win 95 you won't have much space left for installing programs. Another thing is to check the system requirements for the external CD-ROM, it might require a faster CPU to work. Do all the research first before changing OS, it could save you a lot of time & money. One last thing is from what I heard USB doesn't work very well on 95, it was designed to work with 98 & later OSs.

Good luck.
Z

Reply to Z's reply from DOC: Thanks for the reply Z would i be any better off if i first cleaned the hard drive on my laptop of the syst that are now on it so there would be more space for the win95 OS i dont use any of the stuff thats on it any way. win95 already has paint and such included with it. Also the laptop seems to work great as it is but when i try to make a back up disk off the laptop i get{lost clusters have been detected on drive C: exite backup and run CHKDSK. i think i tryed that by going to file manger C:\DOS\*,* and clicking on dos folder and then on the right side along with other folders and docmets i saw where there is a file program that said CHKDSK.com 13302 12/3/93 12:00am. and i clicked on it and somthing ran but i dont think anything happened because when i go back to do the backup disk/floopy i still get the same thing lost clusters also i checked the systm info on the laptop and i see where there is 77% systm resources free and 24.419 kb memory free on the laptop now if that matters any on what i would like to do all i really want this laptop to do is check my E-mail and make an attemp to surf the web the best it can will im at work and out and about i know it will be slow but i've been on webtv for so long im used to that lol. and of course to learn about how theses things work once again thanks for the reply Z any help would be great from all DOC~

HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP!

Here is the problem folks:

I was trying to upgrade from 3.1 to Windows 95. There was not enough disk space available to do the upgrade. Well the hard drive went to the land of format and none of the sound card or cdrom drivers were backed up. Here is what I am working with: An old crusty, wooden gear runnin', case made from granite, blue haired Packard bell. It has DOS 6.22 on it. It also has windows 3.1. There is enough space now to let it load Win 95 if I can get some help on loading some drivers. I have a sound card, but not sure exactly who makes it, it says in large letters MOZART-16. I have seen many references referring it as a SoundBlaster. The sound card has 4 different places to hook up the ribbon to the cdrom. One for PANASONIC, one for IDE, one for MITSUMI, and one for SONY. The PANASONIC, IDE and MITSUMI will allow the ribbon to attach but the SONY is smaller that the others, less pins. When the cdrom was working last week before the format, it was and still is hooked up to the IDE pin port on the sound card. I have downloaded tons of different drivers, been through tons and tons, hours and hours of these help boards and still no remedy. I know the system works so it has to be somewhere in the configuration. I have configured the autoexec.bat & config.sys like others have said, added switches, removed them and same errors: MSCDEX not installed No valid CDROM device drivers selected No drives are attached, drives are powered down, or communication failed The device driver is not installed No drives found aborting installation
Device drive not found: 'MSCD001' or any others I have matched up in my autoexec.bat & config.sys
BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH..... When I start with a boot disk using start with cdrom support I get the same errors, however it does successfully load the diagnostic tools on to drive D. This is the only time I get a drive D. Some of the soundcard tests that I have ran stops me and says "Hardware Initialize Fail" and on some of the other tests, I hear sound. The sound is being pulled from the disc not the cdrom. I'm not concerned with the sound as much as I am with getting the cdrom to work and to read Win 95. When I go into the setup utility and Advanced CMOS setup, there is no where to config a cdrom, maybe because the cdrom is hooked through the soundcard? The cdrom has a green light that is on, when I press the button to eject it just sits there and looks at me like a lazy dog, but when I unhook the ribbon from the sound card and press the eject, it jumped out so fast I got knocked outta my chair! I am taking a breather from all of the message boards and do not know exactly where to check for any responses to this message so please email me with EXACT, DETAILED instructions on how to fix this puppy:

*REWARD* Whoever can help me fix this problem WILL receive a $25.00 gift credit for ANYTHING at my website. There are about 4,000 different items to choose from. Not trying to spam, just want to reward someone for taking a little time and trying to help me fix my problem.

MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE TO ALL YOU GURU'S!!
