I formatted my c: drive and installed Windows 3.1 for a simple foundation to work on. Simply because the cd-rom wont work and the bootdisk with cd-rom drivers don't help. Now when I turn on the computer after installation I get this message: "You started your computer with a version of MS-DOS incompatible with this version of Windows. Insert a startup diskette matching this version of Windows and then restart. System has been halted." Last I knew Win 3.1 has no startup disk. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Win31 runs from DOS. You must have DOS installed or else run it from a bootdisk. DOS5 or 6xx is fine, DOS7 requires a patch (3xstart)
Those people that think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do

Yes, you must install Dos before you install w31. I suggest you install Wengier's version of Dos 7.1, available in my Bootdisk section. Dos 6.22 will work too, but 7.1 will give you several improvements, like LFN for starter. So Format that drive and start again, it's worth it in your case.
