I have Win 3.11 installed on my 486. It has some network card attached and cable is connected to a hub. The questions are how can I set up network and access it from that computer other computers and is there any way to install Internet Connection sharing on it?
Any helpfull replies or resourses are greatly appreciated.Alek, RPR Representative

win 3.11?
that is a 16bit OS and most sharing software wont run on that, i say that if u have at least 8mb of ram 25-133mhz processor and a 250+ HDD (or u can upgrade) its time to upgrade to windows 95/nt! if it doesnt have cd rom then get a cheap one @least 4X hook it up check if there is an xtra ide controller if not yull have to share with hdd (set DSP jumper) for most conner drives. then u can check out http://www.wingate.com/ and if you do not know what the driver is or windows 95 cannot detect it get another network adapter or look @ the old 1 and see if theres anything written on it. if yur confused or do not want to attempt this take it 2 a repair shop but i dont think its worth it.

I would say that even if you were able to connect to the Internet with the 3.11 computer you couldn't do anything on the Internet anyway.

I must respectfully disagree with the nay-sayers. I would not upgrade a 486 to Win 9x. I have an IBM PS/2 with 16meg of RAM (the most it will hold) and a relatively new 486mhz chip. With the full load of RAM and the updated processor the machine is pretty quick... by 486 standards.
Making the switch to a 32 bit architecture can make things easier but it will make the machine run slower. And the last thing anyone needs is a 486 running any slower than it was originally intended to run.
No, it isn't as easy to keep the OS but remember that it does have its merit. The OS has a small foot print, it is far more stable than any of the subsequent Win OS and plenty of patches exist (for free) to get it where it needs to be.
As for a 486 not working on the Internet, exactly how much processing power do you suspect it takes to surf? I've owned at least one cell phone that would allow me a crude internet experience and there are dozens of hand held computing appliances that will do the same thing even better.
My personal belief is that an ample supply of 486 chips could make the world of computing far more interesting. Last month I bught a 486 laptop computer with a black and white monochrome screen, 9 meg of RAM and an eithernet card. It's running MS 95, and no I won't be watching DVD movies or running the latest video intensive games on this machine but it can do what I need it for - word processing, scheduling and checking Email. And best of all I can do all that from a cofee shop.
Good luck with Win 3.x. It won't be easy but it can certainly get the job done.
