Hi,
I am trying to install win 3.1 on a old 386.
I am able to do a clean install, but after it says windows has been installed, click to restart, once restarted, it says invalid system disk and there is no disk in A:
I can put a dos boot disk in and it will boot to the command prompt, but when I go to c:\windows and type win, it says my himem.sys and config.sys are missing but they are in the windows directory.
Any help would be appreciated

Check your Autoexec.Bat & Config.Sys files in the Root Directory of C:\

Config.Sys should have the lines

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.exe NOEMS

So yar installed a version of DOS other than MS DOS 6.22.

None of the others install system files when formatting.

Right then - that's good!

"Invalid system disk, insert a . . " is the error message for a missing master boot record.

In Dos use edit to create a file in the root drive called "config.sys'. (Fail to see how this is fucked up! - this file is created when DOS 6.22 is installed.) Add the lines Kev mentioned. Save and reboot.

I also made the same goof!! My 386 has the same message, but I can't get it to go any further. After referring to Windows for DUMMIES (which describes me), one big goof I made was Format C. Did I also delete DOS off the hard drive?
