Hey,
im tryingto install win 3.1 on a compaq notebook.
when i want to install dos 6.2 i have to boot the laptop with a win98 startup disk. then im able to install dos but the problem is that the computer says to me "SGE 042 failure system halted" or something like that i can boot with the win 98 disk and install 3.1 but the he says that win 3.1 is incompatible to my dos.. understandable.. so can you telle me what this SGE 042 failure means ?

A system halted message means that the Post routine does not continue with the loading of the operating system.Hardware problems are to be blamed.Memory sticks,ROM bios, motherboard etc.are all possible source for the problem.Suspect the memory sticks first.Try to boot without them. Many older computers have 4 Mo of RAM soldered on the motherboard. If you want to use Win 3.1 and dos from Win9X use the 3Xstart program to patch the Win 9X dos system files and make it compatible with Win 3.1 http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk/download/3xStart.exe Good luck.
