I've been wanting to install Internet Explorer 5 on my beloved Compaq LTE 5400 P150 laptop running Windows for Workgroups, but I'm afraid it's going to be too bloated and slow. I have a ton of hard drive space and 48 megs of RAM, so that's not really the issue; I'm currently using Opera 3.62 which is fast but crashes and doesn't work well on a lot of sites. I just don't want IE 5 to clog up my fast, smooth-running machine, and I suspect that even if I install it and then decide to later uninstall, it's going to leave a bunch of crap on my drive and in my Windows system files. Would I be better off installing Netscape 4 or is that another turtle?
Anyone?

Yeah, it's called windows 3.1. I bought a laptop for $20 with Windows 3.1 and it was some fun. Then the hard drive failed and displayed 'No O/S installed' and that was the end of that exciting week. I use it now as a piece of non-working electronics to make my room look smaller than it is.

I'm not sure what files IE5 would leave if you uninstalled, but I think you should go ahead and try it. It works fine on my 133Mhz 32MB RAM PC. I also have Netscape Communicator 4.08 on this PC, but there are some site that don't work there, but they do in IE. (And a couple the other way around)

It depends on the site. Some sites IE will just sit there for 5-10 seconds not doing anything, acting as if it froze when it didn't, and then completes the page loading. Netscape doesn't do that, but sometimes it seems to take more time loading everything than it should, and minimizing/macimizing start the loading all over again. All things considered, I'd say while they both have quirks, IE is faster.

Has anyone noticed that their system is slower though after installing IE? I mean, does IE automatically load part of itself into memory and steal resources even when it isn't load and you aren't even on the Internet?

No, it doesn't make any difference to the system. (that I can tell, anyway) As far as I know, it isn't running anything until you start the browser. (Unlike Windows 98)

With 48 Megs of RAM IE5 should run pretty well on your system. PC Freak is right, as long as it isn't loaded, it won't hug your system's resources. But if you try it and then are not happy with it, i got the complete procedure to manually unistall IE5 (remove all traces) from Microsoft's support a couple of years ago. I will upload the text file to my site and put a link in my Support section later today.

Lightspeed: Could you please post the link here when you add the info to your webpage?
Thanks. And thanks to everyone who replied

I have a old AST Intel 80486 25Mhz with 10 Megs of RAM and Internet Explorer 5, and it runs perfectly smooth.

John, i have no doubts IE5 certainly works well on your system. The concern here was only about speed. If you tried IE 3.03 SP1, i'm sure you'd find it noticeably faster than IE5 on your system. On Philowar's system's however, with 48 megs of ram, the difference of speed would be less noticeable in my opinion.
Philowar, if you need that link i spoke about for uninstalling IE5, you can find it easily as it is presently the very last one on my main page. But as i just said, i expect you will probably find IE5 to be adequate, if not blazing fast.
