I tried the DOS 6.22 boot disk, typed in C:\WIN , said invalid drive. Already been told DOS 6.22 Does not read FAT32 HDD.
Should I make a different partition? (ie. FAT16 or what?)

Hi ITĄ
win3.xx does not perform in a FAT32 partition.because it needs DOS in order of running properly.
You have first delete your present partition with FDISk,then restart your pc,run FDISK again, and if your HDD itīs bigger than 2GB,you must answer the question about activate the longer drive compatibility with a NO.
Then format yuor drive, restart again and run FDISK one more time, select the option 4,and if FDISK tells you that your partition itīs FAT,(not FAT32),then proceed to install MS-DOS,and then Win 3.xx
A lotta typing,isnīt e?

You can infact run Windows 3.1 on FAT32. However, you need a version of DOS which supports FAT32.
I'm currently running Windows 3.1 and 3.11 here using DOS 7 from Windows 98. Windows 3.1 works perfectly on a FAT32 parition. About the only thing it doesn't do is support long file names..

Hello, I successfully installed windows 3.11 on an old computer for a friend, but I used a Windows 98 startup disk to get to a command prompt. Well, when I had finished installing.....at the c: command prompt I typed in cd windows and then win to access windows, but it says i need the windows 3.11 startup disk because my version of Dos is not compatible. Does anyone know where to get this startup disk? And dont say bootdisk.com because i've ravaged their site and to no avail..If anyone has it please Email it to me and ill be ever grateful. Also, the hard disk is only 540 megabytes :)
THANK YOU!!

I can send you the first or three of the MS-DOS start up disks and also copies of the six win3.1 start up disks. This is not free however as I will have to pay postage and cost of the blank disks.
I can make you what you want for ,lets say 20 Euros plus postage,I am in france, goto LITHOGRAPHS@HOTMAIL.COM and tell me what you need dont forget your postal address.

I need a windows 3.1 bootdisk. I try to start up my 486 but it says there's a disk problem. A bootdisk would do the trick. thanx!
mferritto@hotmail.com if you can help!

?1?/!!! you booties boot disk 3.1!
I've never heard such garbled vague explanations for someone trying to install Win 3.1. Is that how computers nerds get off--trying hard to be inarticulate. You wouldn't know a good boot disk if you saw one.
Pity the poor soul just looking for a little sensitivity, a little help--don't you believe in kharma?

Alright Lain! He gave a simple answer to the question without any stupid remarks unlike K. woo who's snide remarks are uncalled for. Like your momma said K. woo if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. These forums are for giving/recieving help not stupid remarks.
