Try reinstalling DOS, could be a faulty dos installation.

You need at *least* 1 Mb of RAM - 640K conventional plus 384K extended.
Also, I think you may need to set up himem and emm386 - not sure if Windows does that, but it can't hurt.
Not so sure you need the DOS EGA.SYS driver - if that's what you meant - I never used it on my old machines, everything worked out ok - it might be causing trouble.
You'll need to specify the *exact* error messages if you want to try and solve this problem.

Ok here is what comes up, the exact same message

"Standard mode: fault in msdos extender

EC=0000 CS=0053 IP=058C AX=2400 BX00FC CX=0004 DX=0AEF

SI=0060 DI=025C BP=0DDC DS=0AEF ES=004B SS=004B SP=233E"

Ok, but do you have 1 Mb or more of memory?
Is DOS set up correctly and configured for high and upper memory (himem, emm386)?
Are you installing the DOS Ega.sys driver?
You should have the utility program MSD.exe (comes with DOS6/Win3) - it will provide a lot of information. It never hurts to use scandisk or similar to check for disk errors just in case.
I have to admit that the hex stack output is pretty much meaningless to me, what I wanted to know was the exact message you mentioned concerning:

"something about x:\*386, and cannot get into enhanced mode"

DOS extenders are programs that make use of memory above 640K, so if that's where the problem is, I would suspect a problem with your extended mem - either not enough, bad memory or incorrectly configured.

Iv'e got all you say but when emm386 starts up right at the end of it's text it says emm386 inactive. So it try turn it on by typing "emm386:w" and it says drivers not installed, where would i get the drivers from. I have re-installed dos several times, I have also re-formatted and starte from scratch.

Just a guess but, you might try remaking your 6.22 bootdisk and reinstall. I think your emm 386 may be bad there. Just a guess. (cause i've never had that one) Will keep looking to see what I might find.

Good luck
Rick

Yeah, this is a new one to me as well.
Does sound like either a bad DOS install or maybe even bad mem.
Using a Win98 system (?) to do the install seems like a strange way to do things, and may well have complicated matters.

Still looking but, check out Lightspeed's page http://www.geocities.com/yblightforme/lightspeed.html

Where I found a link to this ram diagnostic download http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp

might help point you in the right direction.
Most everything I've seen seems to point to a bad DOS somewhere. Also try remaking all of your 6.22 (boot and 3 program disk) and reinstall. Tried them on my test system today and installed without a hitch.(emm386 enhanced mode and all) 6.22, win 30/3.1 ran fine. Where did you download from?? Anyway, try these for now and I'll keep looking for the reason as well as possible fixes.*K*

Don't give up yet.

Rick

To exxxme: Make sure EMM386.exe is in your \DOS directory. Then make sure you have a line in your CONFIG.SYS file that says something like:
DEVICE=C:\DOS622\EMM386.exe X=B000-C7FF RAM 2048
It should be up near the top of the file. If you have enough RAM to specify more than 2048 expanded memory, use it. Good luck.

I work TS at a computer company and i had a customer just call me with the exact same problem.
We did a Debug Fdisk format and reinstall
no go
he mentioned that he recently added more memory than the system could actually happen.
I had him remove the new memory and then we rebooted. we were able to install windows with no further problems.

Just to add another note to my comment:
its possible that your system has too much memory for you to add 3.x to your system.
That was the case with my customer... he was trying to run win98 with 700+ mb of ram.
had him pull all but 256mb and it worked fine.
