Sorry, I know I just posted here, but I'm suddenly extremely curious:

do people STILL install windows 3.1?
windows 3.1 is the ancient OS right (not some weird thing that means year 3100)
if people still install 3.1....WHY?!!!

is it just the geek in you that says:
I have windows 3.1 and EVERY SINGLE OTHER WINDOWS OS plus...LINUX AND (wait for it) a computer that runs on apple IIc!!!!

sadly...I do have an apple IIc...

Why is it every other month someone stumbles in here (or the DOS forum) and has the 'wit' to pose (once again) that ridiculous question?

Now that'd something worth knowing.

hehe...because we all think we're so clever.

and I actually have a decent excuse: it's 11:51pm here and I'm very depressed because I have to be awake in 6hrs to work.

Why. Because when I installed it, it was the the current version of Windows. Still have two machines with Win 3.1x, a Hercules monochrome 286-16 with 60 MB MFM hard drive and an IBM 486SL2-50 (whose only crash was cause by a drive full error).

I like giving new life to old machines. Many people use their computers just for their word processor, or for their spreadsheet. They certainly don't need Win XP for that... Worse still, I've seen entreprises using modern hardware just to run DOS sales programmes... Win 3.1 is so simple - run on modern hardware it's very fast and, if you just happen to know a couple of things, is sufficient (I believe) for the needs of an average user...

let's say I wanted to get a copy of win 3.1 just for the sake of having it...

where would I get it?
also, is it really feasible to do word processing on it? I mean don't you need/want the newer versions of word (or whatever) to be able to understand what your files are?

Indeed - prior to the advent of WinXP and the Pentium 4 processor, ancient peoples were obliged to make use of stone knives and bearskin for everyday computer tasks - although the more advanced tribes became skilful with the abacus & cuneiform

I guess you'd go to a p2p or warez site.

This ain't it.

We had word processing before Win 3.1. We even had WYSIWYG on DOS. Actually our Win 3.1 machine is used for task switching. The primary applications are DOS. Word Perfect 5.1, Lotus 123 r2.3, and our inhouse DOS applications.

Old copies of Windows 3.1x can be aquired LEGALLY through the second hand software trade on ebay. They are often sold as DOS 6.22 + Windows combo packs, as Microsoft used to sell most of them like that.

As the webmaster has said countless times, this forum cannot and will not endorse software piracy.

Best Regards,

Oliver.

I first started using this site 2 years ago and this same question was being asked then and two years down the road it's still being asked. But what amazing me most is people on this site still try to answer it instead of ignoring it. (strange)

I frequently tag these dilettante, tourist posts for removal by the webmaster (and they very often are deleted)

Why? At best they're a total waste of everyone's time, and can become contentious.

This one fits the first category and is flirting with the second

Computers in the future may have only 1,000 vacuum tubes and perhaps only weigh 1 1/2 tons.
