What to do with an old laptop?

Comment:

Have inherited an old Compaq 486 laptop with small (116MB) HDD and 16MB RAM, currently with DOS 6.2/Windows 3.1 but no disks. Would appreciate serious (more or less!) suggestions for updating OS. Is 95 too fat? Know a good source for DOS/3.1/95 OS disks on floppy? Anybody have experience with Linux on such a machine? Would value suggestions that don't involve upgrading hardware -- she is maxed out in the memory dept and to preserve my low investment strategy am hoping to find a way to make her work within present limits. (PS: this writer is not responsible for injuty incurred due to strenuous expressions of humor.)

Thanks, CG

for Win 3.1. I have 133 MHz Pentium with 16 MB memory and do not want to upgrade to win 95.

I have 486DX100 with 32MB RAM and 520MB HD running Windows 95C (OSR2)in FAT32 Mode with PCMCIA 28.8kbs modem. It is OK for me as a remote access for e-mail when away from home. (IE 4.01 & Outlook Express)

Even with HD as it is update to MS-DOS 6.22 and DriveSpace and Windows 3.11 plus 16bit version of Internet Explorer 4.01 (It has Dail-Up Networking and Outllok Express, just like the 95 version!) Hook up a modem and away you go!

You do not say speed of processer if it is SX25 Forget it. Win95 runs OK if a lttle slow on DX50 gets better on a DX66 but is really good on a DX100 (minimum 8MB but better with 16+ of RAM)

Only thing to look for is a cheep larger 2.5" HD to fit. 500MBs plus for 95

when you say with no disks does that mean no floppy drive? or no back up software? i have a toshiba t1950cs with a 200mb with 95b uncompressed. it better to have uncompressed so it runs faster too. I would say keep win 3.1 or up grade it to 3.11 networking it
