Yeah so this I am wondering. I have PC-DOS 2000 (IBM PC-DOS 7.0 Rev 1) as my main DOS, and could not be happier.
Back in the days I used 3.1 for everything, we never had no MS-DOS 7.1 - so now I am wondering what exactly this is.
Did somebody yank the DOS out of Win 98 and stuck in the 6.22 applications?

MS-DOS 7.10 is a version of MS-DOS with many enhancements, new features and bugfixes over MS-DOS 6.22.
Note that by default, Win9x uses a special and incomplete version of MS-DOS 7.x, which is sometimes called "WinDOS 7.x" as a underlying DOS.
The standalone and complete version of MS-DOS 7.10 with installer is available from:

More information about this is available at:

More or less YES that is just what it is!
Over the years Microsoft have reduced the number of DOS utilities in Windows 9x some for compatibility problems and others for the hell of it! In 1995 they did supply a collection of the on the 95 CD-ROM and available as a download (In a file called OLDDOS.EXE)
"The standalone and complete version of MS-DOS 7.10" as described by Wengier is not an official version of MS-DOS by Microsoft, But a compilation of DOS Utilities with main files as provided with Windows.
As good as it is, that is all it is a collection of DOS files and utilities made up into an installable set.
For use with modern PC's with larger harddrives it is great. But for older slower machanes with drives under 2GB stick with 6.22

I would just like to publicly THANK Wengier for assembling the MS-DOS 7.1 packages. I am very impressed with its ease of use!
I'm still having a bit of a problem getting WFW 3.11 to display long filenames, but I'm sure I'll figure it out soon. :-)
