Not at all.

Might check your system.ini and ensure 32BitDiskAccess=off

Yes, that should do the trick, did the same thing to me once.

And 32Mb shouldnt be too much, I has 96Mb RAM in VPC and that never hurt anything. I think once I tested that DOS7.1 patch on 128Mb RAM with 98SE.

Talking of 7.1 Patches! What version of DOS did you install it on top of?

I believe that Mick was wondering what DOS kev87 was using for his win install.

If not - then I am.

I think so, too. IBMWarpster apparently
misunderstood Mick's question. We all know
that WinDOS7.x is from Win9x.

kev87: What version of DOS are you using
kev87?

So, you have now installed 6.22 and it still does not work?

Change to the \Windows Directory and type SETUP to run the DOS based Windows Setup. Now change display to Standard VGA and exit.

Try to start Windows. (If still in the \Windows Directory - Just type WIN and press Enter.

Does it work now?

Ok - let's see

You've setup a FAT16 partition using DOS622 on a virtual machine and installed WfW3.11

You get the windows splash screen and then.. nothing - it reverts to DOS or what exactly? Any error messages?

Turning 32bitdiskaccess off (iirc) is adviseable due to an incompatibility with HDDs larger than 500 odd Mb - there's a workaround for that, but it's not important at this time.

Selecting basic VGA is to prevent any high res video problems due to a possible incorrect video driver.

Not too sure at this point what could be causing the problem - swapfile maybe?

Is memory management setup in config.sys and autoexec.bat?

ok here EXACTLY happens bare with me a moment...
ok i setup a virtual machine in virtual PC i installed dos 6.22 on it and formated the hard drive (FAT 16) to 2gb i installed all the usual DOS stuff (mouse drivers etc.) and then i installed WFWG 3.11 when i type win at the command prompt i see the start up logo breifly then i see the command prompt but at this point no commands work so i am forced to restart. i think the hard drive might be the prob but not sure, can WFWG work with 2gb?

Yes it can.

It can work with DOS7.1 on larger drives as well (with some coaxing).

Could be a virtual PC issue - don't know much about that.

I suspect it may not a VPC issue as this same symptom happens ( rarely) with new wfw installs too, usually if there's an incompatible video or network driver loaded..
Possibly the quickest way to find out (since you can't actually go into windows and de-install any drivers) is just do a re-install of WfW on the Virtual drive, but make it a minimum install, and deselect all but the basic options (eg. 16 color 480x640, no network drivers, etc) and then, if you can then get into windows, install them one at a time- if you make copies of your system files each time before you try a different driver or setting, then if you find an incompatibility, you can just swap the system files for the previous ones ( a simple restore approach)..
At least, this is how i'd go about it..
Good luck...

Sorry I am late getting back, But it seems the Basic VGA did not work? Reason for test was covered by jboy. I tend to go with dominicus and try a new 'MINIMUM' Install here.

And yes it has happoned to me before with WfWG on a new install in the past. You never really find out why...

After three days it must be obvious that if the MSDOS and W3.x disks are OK then it is not a problem for this forum.

It seems that this is an EMULATION problem in VPC and therefore would it not be wise to ge a small hard drive and install the O/S and GUI as M$ intended.

ok for feauture information if you use virtual machine additions in DOS that can prevent windows from loading, 95, 3.1, etc. so wfwg can't use virtual machine additions, but the network should work for copying files with out cd's or diskettes also you could use winISO to make a cd image instead of using a CD
