I am going to be moving aorund a lot this winter and wanted to set up my laptop to be able to connect to a Broadband or DSL modem directly without using a network or connecting through ICS (I know I will have to hijack somebody elses computer to activate the line). I have read that this is possible but how is it set up? There isn't much information on 3.11 networking except basic stuff that is in the manual. Or should this prove too complex for me (theres a good chance it will) how would I set up Windows 95 for this? I know with 95 it would most likely just be manually entering the ip information, but I am totally new to networking and don't even know how to do that. I spent months hunting down all the drivers for this thing. Now all I have to do is get it internet ready and I'll be sittin' pretty. I am not partial to any particular browser or anything like that. Thanks for any help you can give.

you'll be wasting your money cause the computer will not be able to keep up with the connection which will make it seem like your on dialup.
A more appropriate fit would be a dial up connection and the opera web browser.

There would most likely be more than one computer on the connection. If not there will probably be several people going in on it so the extra cost of DSL would be negligable compared to never losing an email becuase you got disconnected while sending it.
Do you just have to set up the computer for a TCP/IP network and enter the proper IP address? I Have all the hardware set up. I just need to figure out the configuration.

Install a Network card, ensure you have NDIS2 drivers available.
Download the updated TCP/IP stack:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;99891
Setup WfW 3.1 Networking as shown here, but use the TCP/IP protocol, NetBeui, IPX etc not required:http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wfw311ni.htm
Download Internet Explore 16bit version 3, 4 or 5.http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/16bit
http://classic.tucows.com/softweb_default.html
Depending on the ADSL connection, you need to set the TCP/IP address to "either receive from DHCP" or "manual configuration", obviously dependent on the persons ADSL, this will also work with Win98 or later ICS, or AnalogX Proxy software for W95/NT4:http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm

Well,
Here is my setup at home;
One computer, PIII 500mhz 256 Meg RAM with:Cisco 678 DSL modem,
Win 95
2 network cards
AnalogX Proxy server (See Roger Ashley's comments above)One network card connects to the DSL modem. The other connects to a hub that 2 or 3 other computers are hooked up to at any given time.
The other computers run WFWG, Win98SE and XP and can all connect to the Internet, using assigned IP addresses to connect to the DSL modem computer.
I have both Opera and IE5 on the 486 running WFWG.

Excellent. Thanks for the step by step. Just when I thought I was computer literate I had to figure out how to do this. I am going to be using a Xircom Pocket Ethernet Adapter 3 which has the DOS drivers. I'll get crackin' on that and keep a pack of smokes and a CD of whale calls set to new age music handy in case it starts to get diffcult. Seems simple enough that I shouldn't have any problems.

I know it's possible Make sure it is WFW 3.11, not WFW 3.1, win 3.;1, or win 3.11.
Download the updated tcp/ip protocal (TCP/IP 32b), also if yo're winderin' I had a 486sx 33mhz. networked to XP home it was capable of using broadband in ie3 but all we have is aohell dial up @24k; aol does not allow ICS.
