(sorry if this doesn't go here, I'm kinda new at this)

I recently recovered some files from my old Win 3.11 harddrive of some great importance. The HDD is too old to run again, so I figured I'd try to open the files on my Xp laptop. After fiddiling around for awhile, I gave up on it. I went looking for my floppy disk box, and found all the stuff I needed software wise:
Dos 6.22
Windows for workgroups 3.11
Microsoft Works (IDK what version)

Also, I got my backup CD of all my programs from 3.11. I also got out the IE 5.1 installer.

Well, after searching a bit, I got the VMware workstation and Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 (they said '07 didn't support DOS). I messed around in it, then got a few extra things I might need (my secondary motivation for this was the fact I found my doom disks, wolfenstein files, and a few other games I had been misssing due to lack of 3.11) like the sound blaster drivers, the s3 trio drivers, video for windows, WinG, and the suggested network card driver. Well, I got the sound card working, then messed up on the video. I got the video up on the second time, then the sound card made it mess up alot. I finally got them both working toghether, then started on the networking. that totally bombed my system, and I couldn't make it load without errors of no connection.

My question is this:
What files do I need to make my wireless network card in xp work as an internet access in WinfWg3.11?
What do I need to make the video setup right, and what is suggested?
what do I need to get the sound card right?
What else would I need other than the aformentioned addons?

Just a bit too reto

Though I never worked with wireless, it shouldn't be that big a deal (and you likely won't need anything for it for WfWG3.11). From the Virtual PC 2K4 Helpfile:

To configure the network adapters used by a virtual machine:

1. Open Virtual PC Console.

2. In the list of virtual machines, click the virtual machine on which you want to configure network adapters, and then click Settings.

3. Click Networking.

4. In the Number of network adapters list, click the number of network adapters that you want to make available to the virtual machine.

5. In the Adapter 1 list, select the appropriate network adapter.

6. If you specified more than one adapter in step 4, repeat step 5 for Adapters 2, 3, and 4, as appropriate.

Notes:

* To open Virtual PC Console, on the host operating system, click Start, point to All Programs or Programs, and then click Microsoft Virtual PC.

* You can also open Settings from the Edit menu of a Virtual Machine window.

* Which adapter you select is dependent on the type of network access users need. For more information about the use of network adapters, see Managing network connections and sharing for virtual machines.

If your XP (host machine) connects to the internet, then you should be able to "fool" the virtual one into thinking that the connection is through a network card.

You'll likely need to use the generic (SVGA) drivers for your video card, since it's highly unlikely that you'll find Win3.1 drivers for it.

Sound in Win3.11 is usually setup as a Soundblaster.

Use the VM addons to allow the Virtual OS to have access to other drives (CD/DVD Drives).

But if you're really wanting to get back some "lost DOS glory", there's nothing quite like having it on a spare machine (and there's a lot fewer headaches as well)

Okay. Tried the stuff...Got everything re-setup again, with my sound and video up. I installed the VMAddons, along with my xtra stuff (VfW, WinG, Win32s...ect). Now, There obviously is something extra needed when it comes to networking. Something INSIDE WfWG3.11...all the drivers, IPaddresses...What exactly do I need to install and set software wise?

The VirutalPC Guy's way...didn't seem to work, I always got the "network was not started" error.

As this seems to be the last big hurdle until I get a nice stable system up, this will probably be all that I ask for.

(oh, and the extra machine...I had one, then the powersupply broke, the B: drive got jammed, and there was no mouse or networking...or sound card to speak of.)

Just a bit too reto

I remember installing it with WfWG 3.11 after getting it (and of course DOS 6.22) running on VPC2K4. Unfortunately, it's been quite a while (and I blew away the virtual drive for WfWG in favor of a new one for Win'95) so I can't really say whether it was the solution to an internet connection or not...

You can find out about the loopback adapter (and other VPC stuff) here:

You don't need special drivers for the sound in Windows 3.1x in Virtual PC, just choose the Creative SoundBlaster card in "Drivers" control panel and set to port 220 and IRQ 5.

Unless of course you're talking about for DOS mode. But even then a simple Set Blaster=A220 I5 D1 should suffice.

At the DOS prompt type:

edit c:\autoexec.bat

and simply add the line:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1

Is it Windows you're trying to get sound on or something else?

I'm trying to get a good, working, stable Windows for Workgroups 3.11. The workgroups part isn't needed, but I cant find my 3.1 disks...they might simplify things...

But I'm trying to run some older programs and such...mostly to fuel my need for nostalgia trips. WfWg is actually MORE than I need, and I'm thinking about trying to get just plain 3.1. Also, d'you think DOS 7.1 or 6.22 is better? I got 6.22, but 7.1 has usb and mouse...

And really? all I need is to add that little line? No drivers, nothing? O_O; Hmm...

(a side note, related to one thing I"m trying to run...Does the game Chex Quest 2 crash when opening the red door in VPC? it does in DOSBox and the plain XP environment...but not in pure DOS...)

Firstly, although you don't need the "workgroups part", WFW 3.11 is generally more stable than any of the previous 3.x line. I would go with this option personally. If not, there is nothing to stop you installing plain Windows 3.1 in a seperate directory such as C:\Win31 and having both installed on the virtual machine. That way you can judge for yourself what is better for your needs.

I would stick with MS-DOS 6.22. I have used Windows 3.x on DOS 7.1 in VPC before but I have never managed to get it working well, although that may be due to my configurations. Remember that USB support means nothing in Virtual PC as the Virtual Machine can not make use of USB. For a mouse, just Google MS-DOS mouse driver or something, there are plenty around. But I would say go for DOS 6.22.

Yes that line in the autoexec.bat will suffice for many games, especially those that use SETSOUND.exe. No drivers are normally required, unless it's a fussy game. Also Windows 3.x works fine, like I said, when adding the Creative SoundBlaster sound card in control panel set to those settings (220, IRQ5)

Lastly, I have never heard of that game so afraid I can't help!

They're probably the main updates for Windows 3.x that you will need, there are various other things out there though such as the Year 2000 updates (else file dates will look wrong)

Thanks...I also decided to try out the Chex Quest game now that I have 3.11 up and going.
The game is based off the DooM engine, and has several of the same startup params...However, if I set the sound card to Sound Blaster and the Music to General Midi...It stops on the I_StartupTimer() param...also, getting rid of the sound card works, but gives me an error about the music (M40 @330 isn't available or something). Also, the autoexec line doesn't work...I dont see it when I startup.

Link to where you can get said game:
http://chexquestgallery.webng.com/d...

there is the full cd and a compact install of the free game there. (also, I just got a request for a copy of the 3.11 with CQ working, so...)
