i switched my monitor from colour svga to monochrome vga and changed the properties in windows startup... on restarting my pc windows would not boot up directly - i can boot if i don't load an ems driver and enter win at c prompt... however this doesn't give an intro screen... on trying the windows option from startup, i get as message telling me that EMM386 has experienced error #12 at mem address F000:EB48... how can i resolve this? (my old monitor is not working)... using wfw 3.11 on a 386 machine dos ver 6.20 (dinosaur style)... (i have tried including STACKS=18,512 in my config.sys file but this doesn't solve it)

If you are using a Mono Monitor, you must start Windows in Standard, rather than 386 Enhanced mode. Rem EMM386.exe in config.sys, reboot and type win /s to start Windows, or add Win /s to your autoexec.bat

Catch-22! There is no "Standard Mode" in WfW 3.11. If you type win/s, you'll get an error message telling you that.
Your problem is no doubt a memory conflict caused by EMM386 trying to fit system files into a portion of memory that should be reserved for monochrome video. First, try running MEMMAKER and tell it NOT to use monochrome memory for applications. If that doesn't correct the problem, you will need to find out what memory ranges your video card and monitor require and manually exclude those areas.
As far as a boot disk is concerned, you should be able to make one by booting your system into DOS, putting a floppy into the a: drive and typing a: ENTER, then at the a:\ prompt type format a:/sys. Boot disks for various OSes are also available at http://www.bootdisk.com .
As far as running a monochrome monitor under WfW, I haven't found anything that says it can't be done, although I've never tried it or seen it done. My WfW 3.11 systems and all others I've worked with all had color monitors.

Pardon an error I made on that boot disk. You don't want to go to an a:\ prompt. You need to be at the C:\ prompt when you type format a:/sys . That will copy the DOS system files to the floppy so you can then use that floppy to boot the system.

Many thanks both to Doofus & Richard. Your comments have allowed my pc to boot without memory issues. However I no longer see the wfw boot screen any resolution on this?

ps the boot disk question was for Lisa Starkes - (?)
pps colour panel in wfw 3.11 has a monochrome mode so maybe that functionality was catered for - the monitor is rather impressive and holds its sync. at a level that would put many colour monitors to shame :)
