OS: Windows for Workgroups 3.
CPU/Ram: AMD Duron 1.2GHz
Comment:

Hi everyone,
I have installed Windows for Workgrous 3.11 some time ago and I found out I'm unable of making it to work with 256 colors (more is impossible, my onboard graphics card is too new for this OS, it doesn't have a specific driver), . When i select the 256 color SVGA driver, Windows starts, but only the top part of the screen is visible (only a thin stripe). Everything below this part is black or doesn't have any text, and the mouse cursor doesn't appear below it too. The 16 colors 800x600 driver works well.
And it is weird, as I have a 32mb card, VESA 3.0 compatible, and this card works in 1024x768 32bits in Windows 98 (dualboot), and I play SVGA games in dos (Warcraft II, for example) without problems.
My onboard graphics card is a SiS 730 with 32mb vram
Thanks everyone for attention

"the 256 color SVGA driver"

Typically, Win3x video drivers aren't generic - if you don't have the specific driver (if one even exists) than 16 colours will be about all that will display successfully. More often than not, a mismatched video driver will prevent Windows from even loading (or worse).

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

When I said "the 256 color svga driver" I meant the 256 generic VBE 1.2 driver. I thought it was possible to use them, as my grephics card is VBE 3.0 compilant (and, obviously, supports VBE 1.2 and 2.0).
Anyway, I just accepted using 16 colors

That's a DOS driver, right? Windows requires the specific Windows driver

"I just accepted using 16 colors"

No kidding.

No wonder where did you got this idea. this is the generic SVGA driver that came with Windows for Wokgroups 3.11

I got that idea from your inadequate and disorganized description of events.

There is no generic video driver for Windows, the so called one (SVGA.EXE) works with a limited list of cards - there's a list provided with the driver library, and I'll bet your card isn't on it.

The fact that you can use the card in Win98 is completely irrelevant, drivers are both chipset & OS specific

The thing i thought weird was the fact of it working in pure dos.... Sorry for the disorganization... I'll start to organize my questinons before posting them.
But, anyway, may I use SiS 620 drivers with my SiS 630 card? Both of them are from the same kind (IGP - this I saw at the SiS homepage) and, because of the numbers, i think 630 is an evolution of 620, but i don't know very much about this. I've read somewhere in this forum that there are drivers for SiS 620 for Windows 3.11.

Sis620. A video driver is a very specific bit of software - doubtful if it'll work on a 630, but you can try.

There are DOS VESA drivers that add fuctionality to older cards, but that has no bearing in this case, and is no substitute for the actual driver

There“s a generic 320x200 256 color driver too, which might work on your system.
I doubt its of any use to you but you can add it for fun. If you want it do a search in this forum, I ve previously posted about it.

No luck with the SiS620 driver unfortunately... But I'll try the 256 color 320x200 VGA one, it might br fun :).
I've gotten a copy of the Win3.11 ddk and I'll try to do something like a generic SVGA driver but I doubt I'm capable of: I think I'm probably not experienced enough...
Anyway, thanks everybody
One more thing: I'd like to know if I can use higher resolutions with a Geforce4 MX I'm gonna buy...

The SVGA patch did the trick, at least for 256 colors.
