I hope someone can help!! I have an old 386 4mb ram 250 mb hd and I CANNOT get windows 3.11 to run. I have installed and uninstalled, took out all my cards, EVEN reformatted the drive!!! When I type win at the C:\, the startup screen comes up, then when it gets to program manager: it locks up. I have tried everything!! HELP!!!

Well, I don't use 3.1 but try removing all cards except your video card reinstall windows, if it boots good if not put your cards back, then I would go for the ram flip out some the ram and see if it boots, maybe bad ram?
Hell I don't know I want more info any beeps?

I have taken all my cards and it has integrated video. I did have just 3.1 then I upgraded it to 3.11, thats when it started locking up. So then I deleted 3.1 and installed 3.11 in a clean directory, didn't work. So then I downloaded DOS 6.22 and formatted my hard drive and installed new DOS & WFW 3.11 and it still does the same damn thing it's always done. I'm know it's not the copy of WFW because i installed on a friends 386 with 2mb ram and it worked just fine. I am stumped!!! I'm ready to throw it and WFW over the cliff!

2 Megabytes of RAM is the least Windows 3.1 can work on. Windows For Working Groups probably needs more RAM. Windows 3.11 may even need more RAM.
From what you've said it is not the software because it was completely reinstalled. Memory is probable.

As memory serves, I seem to remember that win311 requires 3-4 mb to run. Incidentally, I've had wn3.1 running on a 286-12 / 640k.
You might want to try to wipe yor hard disk and start from scratch. After formatting the drive, type:

fdisk /mbr

which will kill most MBR viruses that might also be causing this.

I have exactly the same problem in trying to install WfW 3.11 on a notebook with ms-dos 6.22 running. It's a 486DX2-SL, 40 MHz, 250 MB HDU, 7.5 MB RAM. So, memory can't be really the problem I guess.

Can you help?
