Comment:

I installed Wengier's Dos7.10 with my own set of wfwg3.11 on my dinosaur Quantum TRB850 with Ontrack's DDO Ver. 9.52
Even with DOSLFN disabled at setup I can't
1. Set 386 enhanced mode with 32 bit file access or 32 bit disk access
2. Defrag my HD
3. Enable Powerload's PC Speaker.exe (Error message about violating system integrity, application will be terminated)

Whats the solution? Otherwise, can I setup Wengier's Windows 98SE GUI or uninstall Dos 7.10 and install Dos6.22 without losing all my data on my HD? Thanks in advance any advice.

Kaos,

1: For your first question (32-bit access), you must have done something wrong! Please look at the following screenshot (WFW 3.11 using Permanent Swapfile and 32-bit access under MS-DOS 7.10):

http://newdos.yginfo.net/pic/doswfw32.jpg

Make sure WFW IFSHLP.SYS is loaded in CONFIG.SYS, and the drive is locked before creating a new permanent swapfile. Also, the drive in which the permanent swapfile is located must not be a FAT32 drive! Then it works fine.

2: For your second question (DEFRAG), you SHOULD ask Microsoft why they did not make a DOS DEFRAG which supports Long File Names (LFN) and FAT32 drives? DEFRAG from DOS 6.x and SpeedDisk from NU8 don't support LFN or FAT32, so they might destory the existing LFN on the drives and will not work with FAT32 drives at all! However, you should not use DEFRAG too often or it can damage your HD sometimes!

3: For your third question (about speak.exe), you should ask yourself what you have done! The speaker driver SPEAK.EXE works just fine on my system. Here is a screenshot to show how it works (MS-DOS 7.10 + WFW 3.11 + Speaker driver):

http://newdos.yginfo.net/pic/dosspeak.jpg

So, the conclusion is: You should check your steps before you say you can't get them to work!

Note 1: The above testings were done right after a new flash install of MS-DOS 7.10 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 on a empty 2GB FAT16 drive.

Note 2: You cannot get that Windows 98 GUI to work without MS-DOS 7.10 because Win9x GUI checks the current DOS vesion, and if it finds the DOS is not MS-DOS 7.x then it will refuse to work. More information is available from:

Thanks Wengier,
1. It was a freshly formatted by Ontrack v.9.52 with its DDO aa a FAT16 partition (my 04-04-93 Ambios bios will not read full 850MB) and with Wfwg3.11 Ifshlp.sys in
config.sys

2. I have a secondary D drive bootable with Dos6.22 and Wfwg3.11 which works just fine with its 386 enhanced mode with 32 bit fileaccess and speaker driver loaded.

3.How am I able to uninstall Dos7.10 from C drive and install Dos 6.22 without losing all my data?

4. If I reinstall dos7.10 on C and add your win98se gui will it support office97 and or msoffice4.2 (I intend to keep my D drive for games and non-business use).

Looks like I have to write a README file with a FAQ section and even a step-by-step tutorial for users. Especially the 32-bit access and Win3.x speaker driver (SPEAK.EXE), which I have used for a few years.

More important, never try to use DEFRAG from DOS 6.x if there are any LFNs on your drives, no matter what version of your DOS is!

I got a solution for your defrag and its thanks to micro$oft

grab the derag.exe from windows 98 this is a windows 3.1 16-bit executable (MZ - NE)

I have not had time to test it but it should work fine it supports fat32 and lfn

Comment:
I have used 3.11 on some smaller
computers and some friends computers.
Now I am not complaning since 3.11 is the
ONLY logical solution to some older computers.
But I noted a very short life span of the
install about 2 months was all it would last
and then a fatel crash.......
Just woundering if this is normal?
And what other people have seen as far
unrecoverable crashes.

I have been using Dos 6.22 and Wfw 3.11 for four years on an old 486 with 4mb ram. Never yet had a crash of any kind which I couldn't track down to me doing something stupid. Also running wfw on Dos 7.10 thanks to Wengier and all running sweet as a Rolls Royce. What will really cause me lots of angst is when a bit of hardware fails - what chance replacement parts??

It all depends on what you do with it! A basic install with a few programs should last years as Valerie says.
However if you are loading games which have been badly written or you are always trying to tweak your setting it may not last so long.

Normaly Windows 3x slows down with time and full crashes in less than a year is not that commen.

My advice to you is to keep regular backups of any vital data. I have a CD/R of a complete 3x install ready to copy back as needed. (Takes 3 minutes!)

kaos,

If you want to use a DOS version of DEFRAG which supports Long File Names (LFN), but not FAT32 drives, then you can try this DEFRAG.EXE from ROM-DOS 7.10:

http://www.datalight.com/resource_download.asp?r_id=490

Just download and copy it to the MS-DOS 7.10 path, then type DEFRAG. It should work fine for you.
