I'm wondering if there is a web browser for windows 3.1 that is small enough to fit on a floppy disk. I'd like to download a browser with my desktop pc, save it to disk and put it on my ancient Epson laptop to check the html pages i'm making (i don't need to actually use the browser online just offline) any suggestions?...

Hi andy.
Will any of these do? They are free also.

Take care,Linda

If what you want is a browser that will fit on only one floppy disk, you can try Arachne, which is a small web browser for Dos that is smaller than one meg and that will work on almost any old machine. It's a pretty good browser and comes with it's own dialer, although i find it to be slow with sites that have many images.
A more potent solution and the one i recommend would be to use IE3.03 SP1, which is a faster browser and also comes with its own dialer and drivers. I have instructions on my page on how to set it up from floppies. I even created a batch file to create the 4 floppies you need to install it from a floppy drive. All you have to do is download the Internet Explorer 3.03 file (about 4.5 Megs) and my batch file to the same folder, then run my batch file and follow the instructions to create the 4 floppies.
You can find both browsers in the browsers section of my page. Happy surfing!

Andy wants a browser for web design offline. Arachne's rendering is too quirky for that purpose, although I do use it regularly.DidaPro is worth a look, though the 16-bit version is probably outdated by now.
My suggestion would be Opera3.6x. The download will fit on a floppy, there's some support for CSS and JavaScript, and the licensing allows you to continue to use it offline after the 30 day trial. Remember to use text mode if using Write to view the source of your pages.

The only web design program I have seen fit on a floppy is Microsoft Office 4.3. But it actually fits on 24 floppies formatted to 1.7mbs. I'm sorry I don't have the progam on my site. Last time I tried that Tripod yanked 4 of my sites I had files stored on so if you really need this program you can contact me by email and we can see what we can work out to get it to you.

Please read the question, Terri. There are umpteen "enhanced Notepad" webdesign programs, which would all produce cleaner code than Office, but far fewer which are also offline browsers. Those that are, are mainly outdated now and only good for the simplest HTML. Tables, especially if nested, won't display well/at all. CSS will be ignored.
The Opera browser, on the other hand, packs a lot of punch for a floppy-sized download, and is a true web browser.
