Does anyone know a place on the web where I can download wallpaper for my 3.1 machine. I only have a standard VGA card. Where it actually says 640x480 16 colors in control panel.

Thanks!

Hi Janice

yeah, I'm not sure how successful you'll be in finding images of that resolution. Your best bet might be to use a graphics editor (the old PaintShop Pro3 was good) and either create or alter images to the color depth you need.

Paint Shop Pro 3.11

Still, most images reduced to 16 colours will likely look pretty bad - are you sure that your vidcard won't support higher resolutions? If the card has 512K of video ram you should be able to display 256 colours (with the correct driver).

You may be able to determine how much ram is on your vidcard with the DOS utility Syschk

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then give up. There's no sense being a damn fool about it.

Well I was just wondering. The wallpaper that comes with Windows 3.1 & Windows 3.0 don't look to bad & they are low resolutions.
Will give paint shop pro a try though.

Sure, they look alright, but they were originally created in 16 colours. Not much is available online these days in such a low resolution. You can reduce the # of colours with PSP but the end result will likely be pretty unattractive, depending on the image. Even 256 colours (the next higher resolution) is pretty sad, but a bit better.

You can search using Google:

"16 color" wallpaper

(quotes included) and see what you might find

Here are some of Stargate for example.

Good luck

You might want to try graphic workshop for windows 1.1 (googlesearch for the GWSWIN11.ZIP archive) instead, as it has a special file conversion option that is specific to windows 16 color. It seems to look and work better, and be more compatible with w31's base video setting, than any other paint/graphic program..i know when i was limited to 16 color for a couple years , it worked best for me, anyways....

Hi Janice:
You could try to make your own using the Win 3.1 Paint Brush program. I did this years ago by using one of the *.bmp (windows wallpaper bit map files), then erase the picture or modify & save as a different name in windows directory. Then you can use Control Panel to change image. You need to keep picture simple due to only a 16 color image or it will look awful.

Good luck,
Z

I would find out what video chip you have, then
download an upgrade driver . then you will have 16 million color or 256... then you can use a program called IrfanView to make the size you need... You can run any wallpaper you won't
then...

Hi Janice

If you google "301k bitmaps" you will find lots of sites you can dl off of.
I had lots of fun changing my old 3.x wallpapers to any 301k bitmap that I liked.
