Trying to help an senior citizen with 486DX, W3.1 OS.
Is there some sort of W9x "My Computer" equivalent for W3.1? Want to find out how much of the HD is used up, size of the HD, etc.
Thank you for your help

If the drive only has one partition and from the sound of things it does, just type DIR /s in a DOS box. The total used and free disk space will be shown after the drives contents are listed. It could take a minute or two.

At the C:\> prompt in MSDOS, type MSD for an interesting survey of system. 3.1 runs on top os DOS so the info is valid for entire system.

You want FILE MANAGER which is in the MAIN GROUP unless someone has messed with it.
If you open FILE MANAGER, double click the C drive icon it will display the contents, it will also tell you the drive size and free space.

Download Calmira from www.calmira.org
This gives you EXACTLY what you want - in fact it is a Win95 look and feel front end to win3.1
It is brilliant!
Good luck - be careful to follow all the instructions - the first download you are presented with is an upgrade, you have to have calmira 3.0 installed first (i think) which is the seciond download.

If you want a proper "My Computer" icon in Win3.1 your best bet would be to install a little freeware program called Calmira. It only takes up about 2m but will give all the advantages of Win95 with none of the hassle.
Good luck.

if ya wanna put a lot of wankas inna spin - an be confused by their answers, just put a message here.
Yawn

curious george had a good answer, but only if the computer has DOS 6.0 or later. No MSD in DOS 5 or earlier as I recall. But you can type: CHKDSK at a DOS prompt and it will give you nearly everything you want to know about hard drive size as far as total space, used space, system files, etc. If you use the CHKDSK command in DOS 6.0 or later, it will still give you the same info, but will also prompt you to use SCANDISK instead for a more thorough checking of the drive (but SCANDISK won't give you the size information you're looking for, or at least not as much of it). And SCANDISK can take a minute or so to run, depending on system speed and drive size, whereas CHKDSK is very fast!
