I have vmware 3.1.1 build 1790 and i can get it to use the sound card(vmware emulates a sound blaster 16) i actually got some sound blaster 16 drivers from creative labs but when the machine starts up from the dos box it runs the sound blaster diagnostic utility which says it is improperly configured. After windows comes up i hear the startup sound then i see a hour glass and it locks up. Thanx in advance!

I think that Win3.11 works better in the Virtual PC program, but thats not much help really :) Anyway, have you tried running the sound card configuration utility in DOS? What are the port, IRQ settings, etc?
Most sound cards by default use Port 220, IRQ 5 and sometimes have an extra setting, DMA 1. Try these in the configuration program.

I have the exact same problem. The setup for the SB16 has to be run from DOS, so that's not the problem. I think that the problems is, that VMware does *not* support the soundcard emulation under Win3.x. (why, for heaven's sake, not, is beyond me, since it's working under Win 9x/nt/2l and XP. I don't think win95 and 3.1 handle sound hardware *that* differently)
If anyone comes up with anything, please, let me know.

Problem solved! (sort of... :)
I got the sound to work on the wfw311, but with restrictions... (only 8bit sounds, and stereo skips sometimes if other programs are running.) I doesn't matter a lot, although I'd *very* much like the 16bit sound...
To make it work, install the soundcard drivers (in DOS) normally, do not boot when ready, instead, go to c:\ and edit autoexec.bat. The line where the SET BLASTER is, remove the last three options, leaving only "SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1" (you can leave the "H7", but it doesn't work)
REMark the line with "DIAGNOSE /S". reboot.
After rebooting, go to the SB16 dir. (C:\SB16 is default) and run "DIAGNOSE /w=c:\windows" (or other, if you installed wfw311 in different dir.)reboot to make sure. start windows. TaDAAH! :)
If anyone gets the 16bit sound to work... please tell me.
