Hi. I have a Geforce2 mx videocard with 32mb ram. If i set the color settings up to 256colors, the screen messes up :-S 16 color modes are OK. I know that this question is posted many af times here. But i was wondering: WHY IS DOS ABLE TO RUN PROGRAMS IN HIGH RESOLUTIONS IN 256 COLORS ??????? I can run redneck rampage and duke nukem3d in 256 colors at 800x600. Dos can do this just without any drivers. Why windows have so much troubles with it???

Plz answer? ( Sorry for bad english )

Hi Bert:
This is a guess, but it could be DOS games install there own video drivers. Windows needs video drivers to change screen size & colors, if you use a video card later than Win 95 it most likely will not have needed drivers to work. The same applies to other devices like printers, scanners, & so on, this is the way the PC industry gets you to update software & hardware. See if someone has tried a different driver for that video card to try on a gamers site, worth a try.

Good luck,
Z

Windows doesn´t support the VESA standard.

DOS applications mostly do.

I have written about the lack of VESA support in Windows many times in this forum! ;-)

u know Z furman is probably right about dos programs using thier own vid drivers since windows is technicaly a dos program (shell) and it uses it own drivers, why don't u try a generic video driver
