I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but I stumbled across mention of this file:
http://www.japheth.de/downloads/svgaptch.zip
in a newsgroup. It supposedly patches svga256.drv to make it use VESA 2.0, which should allow SVGA (256 colors, 800 by 600?), even if you do not have a specific driver for your card.

Also here
From the readme:
About svgaptch
This tool should patch svga256.drv to make it VESA compliant.
Svga256.drv is a 256 color video driver included in WfW 3.11 with support for special graphics chipsets only. There is no truly generic hi res video driver for Win31 - those found in SVGA.exe work with a limited set
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Actually, it says that *svga256.drv* is the one with support for specific chipsets only. I've just tried out the patch myself, and it seems to work with my Nvidia FX 5200, though scrolling now seems rather slow.

It worked great for me in all resolutions with a SiS 730 graphics card! :-)
At least now I can get to see 256 colors, although I'd love a true color/high color one, but it is TONS better than 16 colors.

The quoted info was from the file's readme:
"Svga256.drv is a 256 color video driver included in WfW 3.11 with support for special graphics chipsets only."
Since svgaptch patches svga256.drv.... (?)
If the patched driver works on your set - great

Interesting, I had never seen it before so thanks.
I will try in the future perhaps, although I have enough cards (even AGP) with genuine 3.x driver....
Because of "progress" newer cards dont have native 3.1x drivers so maybe I need it some day.

i have some real goot 64mb and 128mb card's but i cant use them as my win 3x makes them look all stingy looking. but at least they work unlike my 2mb asus card
