Subject: Using Internet on Windows 3.1OS: Windows 3.1CPU/Ram: 486, 8MB RAMModel/Manufacturer: Not sure |
Comment: For future reference I am considering the possibility of going on the internet using Windows 3.1 or 3.11. I just have a few queries as follows: 1. Modems- I have an external 56k modem which I use fine on another machine running Win98, but am not sure whether it would be possible to use it on Win3.x. Can anyone tell me a. how would I set up such a modem to work using Win3.x or DOS (what drivers I need in particular, not so bothered about dialers/browsers etc. as have this sorted pretty much), b. reccommend what other serial port modems might be suitable and c. if there are any internal ISA modems which are compatible? 2. Regarding internet security. How secure would such a machine be against hackers, malware etc. Are there any firewalls or anti-spyware software (not talking about virus checkers for which I suppose the likes of F-Prot for DOS would be suitable) available for Win3.x? (or DOS?) I did believe I've seen an example of the latter on www.completelyfreesoftware.com and may have downloaded it, but are there any more out there? Alternatively, would any firewalls for Win95 work using Win32s?

Reply: (edit)If the External Modem is a Hardware Hayes Compatable Type it will work AOK, should work without drivers as a standard 56K modem. ISA Modem as long as they have the Windows3.xx drivers will work. IE5 is sold old I doubt anyone would try to hack it.... If go W3 try to find on EBAY "Windows for Workgroups 3.11" it has built in LAN support and IE5 flies on a 8Mbps ADSL Connection

Reply: (edit)Most external (i.e.-serial) modems should be just fine (assuming it's not something like a USB modem). An internal should also work as long as it's "jumperable" (not software-driven---pretty much what was stated above). Actually, dial-up is fine just on plain old Win3.1 (as well as WFWG). On the machines I have running 3.1, Opera 3.62 is still the most "internet-friendly" browser (though it was never "free" like current versions). IE 3.02 thru 5.0 have a ton of problems and most every version of Netscape has too many java-script errors to be usable. You won't have quite the "fun" with any 16-bit browser, but it should still be usable. Little spyware/virii are even concerned with infecting W3.1, but F-Prot for DOS is still available and free (which at least gives some virus-protection)...

Reply: (edit)I' ve been using Opera ver. 3.62 with plain old Win 3.11 and consider it the best available 16-bit browser (though it still nags me with purchasing, which is not so funny since Opera is freeware now). I also think NOD 32 antivirus (DOS edition) is a good solution; the program seems to work even with NTFS partitions. The problem is that it hasn't a TSR module (as far as I know), which means that you don't have real-time protection while browsing.

Reply: (edit)Hi Lynie: Theres a GnatBox firewall for Win 3.1. And an Anywhere Antivurus program. I think they are on Lightspeed's Windows 3.1 page, if I remember rightly. But from what I have seen, most viruses/spyware/etc is written for a 32 bit platform...so probably wouldn't run on Windows 3.1 anyway. I have been playing with Win 3.1 a few years on an older machine I have, and have had no problems (yet).

Reply: (edit)I have used Arachne 1.90 with MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and it is a really great browser. It is *VERY* *IMPORTANT* to have HIMEM installed. Arachne will work without it but not with Windows and it will attempt to use your hard drive as RAM. Before I knew this and I didn't know I needed to clean out the temp directory regularly, it took me 11+ hours to get into the Thinkpad forum. You also need to make shure you have the latest version. There is a link to it on lightspeed's page. Arachne is not the only DOS browser out there but I know it works very well if it is properly installed, and it is well worth the hastle to get it working.
