Comment: Hi there, I've upgraded some of my hardware (main board , CPU, hard drive) but not all of it. I still have an 8-bit Soundblaster, a 4x Acer CD-ROM and a 36.6 USR modem. I want to upgrade to Win 98 to avoid Y2K problems. However, I have the following concerns: -Will I have to reload all my software (WordPerfect 6.1, Netscape) and files and reformat the hard disk? -Does Win98 include drivers for older hardware (CD-ROM, Soundcard, modem) or do I have to get them from the manufacturer? -Are there any problems or pitfalls I should be aware of when doing a Win3.1 to Win98 upgrade? Thanks to anyone who can help.

Reply: (edit)I have upgraded from win 3.1 and 3.11 tp win 98 and in each case (3 times) the hard drive partition failed and ALL information wass lost. I then tried an upgrade from win95 to win98 on the same machine and all is well for over a month now. The 3.x upgrades failed within days. I have heard of others who have had the same problem. The drivers included with win98 should work with your equipment, but I always insist on the manufacturers disk, as this often has extra utilities on it, particularily with a net card.

Reply: (edit)Microsoft has the 95 upgrade from WIN 3.1 still available for sale. It is not quite as good as the complete install though. Here is the PROBLEM. The upgrade gives you the ORIGINAL version of 95 and then you have to download service pack 1 from Microsoft's site , this gives you a version of 95a which is not as good as the OEM version a. That is all you are going to get for 95 on a computer unless you buy a complete system from one Bill Gates's corporate friends. Starting with the COMPLETE version of 95a which still INTENTIONALLY left known bug fixes, Micorosoft decided that they will only sell windows as OEM unless you are buying a major change like 98 and then ONLY the program initially comes. The complete install will only be available in the original version and only from Microsoft directly. After that, you cannot get a complete 98 with built in bugs fixes unless you buy a BRAND new computer from a manufactor. Microsoft will continue to have the upgrade for sale but this will only give you the ORIGINAL version of 98 and NEVER any bug fixes. The 98 upgrade is SUPPOSED to be able to directly install from 3.1, but then again according to Microsoft, 95 is SUPPPOSED to be able to run on a 386 with only 4 meg of RAM, HA HA HA. Microsoft does have a patch on their site to make the file manager in 3.1 y2k compliant.

Reply: (edit) I have a Compaq Presario Pentium I 75mhz computer. The person I got it from had Windows 95 on there originally but crashed it and now has Windows 3.1 on it. She gave me the Windows 95 Companion disk and the book with it which has the Certificate of Authenticity. I went to install Windows 95 with this disk by upgrading and it didn't work whatsoever. So, I formatted my computer and tried it but it says that the setup program must be run in Windows. What is up with this?? She says that I need to delete certain files off of Windows 3.1 to make it possible. If ANYONE can help me in any way please email me as soon as possible. Thank You
