I need help! I recently bought a second hand computer installed with Windows 98. I love it! The only problem is that all my data is in my old computer running on Windows 3.1. Is there a way I can get my data into my Windows 98 program without having to manually input everything?

Hi CCR:
There are a few way I can think of.
1. If data files are small try zip them to a floppy disk, then un-zip in new PC.
2. You could remove the hard drive from old PC (Win 3.1) & make it a slave drive on new PC, the use File Manager (winfile.exe) to drag & drop files or directories to new drive.
3. You could look for a program called LapLink (www.laplink.com) that is suppose to let you copy from one PC to another PC.
4. If you have made a backup of data using the DOS 6.22 msbackup, then I can send you just the DOS backup files so you can copy back from those floppies using msbackup in DOS, e-mail me if interested.

Good luck.
Z

If you're using Dos backup, just copy restore.exe from your Dos directory and use it to open your files under Dos on Windows 98.

You can do what I did. Download a schematic on how to make a NULL modem cable with handshaking. Then, go get two serial
connectors from Radio Hack and an 8 connector wire and then follow the diagram. Or, you can buy one. Probaly run ya twelve bucks. Then, windows 3.11 and 98 both should have INTERLNK.exe and INTERSVR.exe already in them. Like I said, SHOULD HAVE. If not, download them and put em on a disk. Then, get into config.sys of your 98 machine. Lets suppose you have interlnk.exe right in C:, then you type DEVICE=C:\INTERLNK.exe and then save. Now shutdown for now. (Interlnk also tells you this when you try to use it.) Then, plug your homemade null modem cable into the serial ports of both computers. Then, get on your 3.11 machine and copy INTERSVR.exe to drive C: from your disk. Then, run it from the dos prompt in the 3.11 machine. Now, with INTERSVR.exe running on the the 3.11 computer and the cable plugged in to both serial ports on the computers, boot up the 98 machine. And watch the 3.11 machine running intersvr.exe. It will react to the 98 booting up. If not, it useally reacts to opening up My Computer. When you open up My COmputer, you'll see all the drives of both computers. Then, do your drag and drop. :)
Cost of project: $3.00 for 2 serial plugs, old 8 connector eithernet cable out of the garage, and INTERLNK.exe and INTERSVR.exe on disk. OR... buy null a NULL MODEM CABLE WITH HANDSHAKING $12.00
Either way, it gets the job done good.
Write me if you have trouble
