Boot the computer with a Win 98 boot disk.Choose CD-ROM support and run your setup from A drive. You can quick format the drive before to remove all files from the C drive.
format c: /q /u (press enter)
setup (press enter)

Good luck.

CD-ROM support from dos is what was intended to be meant + one possible solution for the Windows 95 setup. Not all people master the skills needed to figure out the way to get the CD-ROM to work under dos and Windows 95 system when installed does not give a clue with the normal WIN 95 boot disk created with the boot disk creation routine.I find it odd that deltree.exe was left out of the Windows 98 ,98 SE and ME boot disks. This is a good dos program to clean program folders from dos provided you know what you are doing. It is a good thing to copy to the diskette.

I didnt see anything in his post about cdrom support, or win98, actually...
but to answer your question..
W95 upgrade only applies to windows 3.1 and up, i vaguely remember an upgrade i tried telling me it wouldnt install from win 3.0 (i did have 3.0 on my system for a short time) and although i think it was the WfW311 upgrade, im pretty sure that its pretty much a standard thing, that all the upgrades require at least win31.
It seems you have the win95b upgrade set so your going to have to install a minimal w31 install to upgrade from.
Apparently theres a way to use a w31 setup file or win.com or so instead of a complete install, but it never worked for me, maybe someone else has firsthand experience with this on this forum...

Thankyou for all the responces, over the long weekend a friend found a set of windows 3.1 to install which I was able to uninstall and then no problem to install win95 so it was a long way around the barn but got to the right destination. By the way TECHMECH I don't know how to format a hard drive , is my cluelessness showing? Thanks again for being out hear :)
