I have a very old Toshiba Satellite that runs windows 3.11 I would really like to upgrade the system to Win95, but I do not have a cd drive on that system. Is there any place where I can find/ buy Win95 on floppy disk???? The laptop has about 350mb hard disk, and I have no idea about the processor (it says 'Intel Inside') so I am guessing that it is Pentium 1 or something older.
To buy - ebay. Otherwise, you could copy the CABfiles etc from the CD's Win95 folder to the hard drive - either by slaving the drive to another system with an IDE-to-laptop type cable adapter or else use a 'laplink' type cable and the appropriate software to transfer via the LPT ports - and install from there.
Space would be a bit dicey, but should install ok. Earlier versions take up less room (95A)
I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime
hey, win95 takes up less than 100mb on minor install but why??? win3.11 is awesome not only would it save you the trouble of installing 95 but it would save you the frustration of using win95
i putwin95 on one of my computers in the middle of summer and it was absolutely terrible my main problem was that i couldnt add any hardware without my registry becoming corrupt and then after it replaced it with a known good backup it became corrupt again and this was when i did manage to get a piece of hardware installed finding win95 drivers for my hardware and then figuring out how to install them and installing them correctly was like looking through a file cabinet that had been dumped out on the floor for one piece of paper which i wasnt even sure what it looked like
my point is, windows 95 is no step up from win3.11, in fact it is a downgrade in my experience if you really want to upgrade get win98, it is only around 250mb and will be so much better than win95, and i bet if you asked some people around here they would be willing to give you a copy of win98

Your experience is not typical - I have 95 running on a half dozen machines. Registries have never become corrupted and drivers were not difficult to find or install.
Win31 runs very well on those machines too, but it is just a bit limited.

well, when i tried to install new hardware the registry would always get screwed up it probably isnt typical, you're right
all im saying is that win3.11 is good enough that upgrading to 95 will not be worth it maybe upgrade to win98, that way the only limitation in the computer will be the hardware itself
I'd say that you're making quite a few assumptions concerning the machine in question (can it support 98?) and for what purpose the machine will be used for.
"my point is, windows 95 is no step up from win3.11, in fact it is a downgrade in my experience"
Seems like a pretty unfounded opinion, but you're welcome to it.
Pretty doubtful if the OP is monitoring this any longer - I'd deem it a 'dead' post (unless otherwise informed)
im sure it would be able to run win98 the only thing that would prevent it from running would be if the laptop had a 386 in which case the "OP" could use the laptop harddrive to ide converter to put it in his other machine to install the OS partly and then put it back in the 386 for the control panel and driver database section of the install
but anyways you're right he's probly not even reading this anymore so who cares
btw i do know what im talking about, i have 1 xp home laptop 1 xp pro tower 2 win98 towers 1 win95 laptop 1 win3.11 WFWG desktop 1 win3.1 desktop
the laptop with 95 is for my dad at work, he uses word and powerpoint on it and thats all he wanted to get it on the internet so his tech guy spent $50 on a pcmcia modem card but never got it to work with any drivers he tried the thing has no cd drive just a floppy but they still got the OS on it ^(-.-)~~~]>:}>
Having numerous computers is no real indication of anything.. other than having numerous computers. I have more - so what? Quite a few have been assembled from 'spare parts' - the rest rebuilt - does that make me an expert? Hardly, but it does show a certain amount of working experience.
It seems to me that because of a problem with one laptop you've decided to condemn Windows 95 - this is not the basis for an informed opinion.
Nevertheless, you are entitled to hold such an opinion, I just don't happen to agree with it.
I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime
its not just the laptop that i had problems with i built one system a while ago which had the corrupt registry problem with 95
win95 is a lot like 98, except that 98 has more hardware support and is a lot more stable, altho they are both very buggy as programs will just stop working for no apparent reason i still say stick with win3.11
Anyone who would pull cards or otherwise monkey around inside of a powered up machine clearly does not know what they're doing.
Your computer experience does not seem to be all that you think that it is - and that's fine, it takes time to develop - just try not to state your opinions as facts.
that is the first and only bad experience ive had working in a plugged in machine
i mess with my configuration so much that i dont even bother to pull the plug anymore now, if i wasnt working on a machine of my own that would be a different story, i would definetly take all the precautions- static strap, pull power cord
and you're right computer skills do take a while to develop it wasnt until last december that i had even opened a computer up i had an old machine from my neighbors garage sale and i wanted to upgrade it from win3.1 since i couldnt play worms armageddon on 3.1, so i stuck in a cdrom drive and from then on i was hooked i have only been working with computers for 8months so you can imagine how much i have left to learn and how cocky my opinions are yet how much i actually have learned since not even knowing what the term cpu meant. i used to spend hours after school reading through posts on this site becuase i wanted to know a solution to every problem you could ever have with a computer im still reading...
what is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other
hey jboy, girl? i just flipped through your homepage, it seems that you have a real problem with win3x simply becuase "win3x lusers" get connected at slower speeds you condemn the OS yeah i read your opinions/experiences and you read mine, and if you dont like it you can piss off. no just kidding, although saying that realy helped me get out some frustration i built up reading your thoughts
now when i want to submit this do i double right click on my left mouse button? or is it the other way around? at least i know to click cancel so i know that much what is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other
oh man. i gotta tell you this story, you will really apreciate this
one day the family computer froze as it likes to do evey so often my mom was sitting at the controls growing ever more confused as i tried to explain the problem to her i told her that it froze and that is why the mouse wont work, it IS NOT broken the next thing out of her mouth,"MIKE MIKE, we need a new mouse!"
i laughed about that one for a week and so did my friends, even the ones who arent computer nerds
