what kind of cd-rom is it?...if it is one that attaches directly to the soundcard you will need completely seperate drivers...does it recognize the cd-rom with a Windows 98 bootdisk?...if you need one go to www.bootdisk.com and download one and recreate it on a floppy and boot with it, if it doesn't recognize your drive than you need specific drivers for it

Paul:

Did you install a corresponding mscdex line in your autoexec.bat file?

Do this:

Replace the line loading the drive in CONFIG.SYS to:

X:\YOURCDROMDRIVER.SYS /D:CDROM01 /E

Where X is your hard disk letter with the driver and YOURCDROMDRIVER.SYS is your CDROM driver file.

Next, add this to AUTOEXEC.BAT.

X:\DIRECTORY\TO\MSCDEX.exe /D:CDROM01

Where X is your hard disk letter with MSCDEX.exe and DIRECTORY\TO is the directory MSCDEX.exe is in.

HTH.

Keith

This is what was put into my autoexec.bat file by the universal cd driver: REM C:\SAMSUNG\MSCDEX/D:SSCD000 (this line was placed in the autoexec.bat twice)

In the config.sys it put this: REM DEVICE=C:\SAMSUNG\SSCDROM.SYS/D:SSCD000 /v
(this line was placed in the autoexec.bat twice)

Because I have two hard drives I changed /D TO /E but it still did not recognize the cd rom. I'm thinking about reinstalling win3.1 from the file at this website http://www.btinternet.com/~woofgbr/ Is there a way I could get the win 3.1 installation from that website onto floppies?

OK, take one of those in the AUTOEXEC out leaving one. Then take out the REMs.

In the config.sys file you should have two entries one for CD one for last drive letter:

device=DEVICE=C:\SAMSUNG\SSCDROM.SYS /D:SSCD000 /v
lastdrive=g

In the autoexec.bat

C:\SAMSUNG\MSCDEX /D:SSCD000

Here's what you wrote:

device=DEVICE=C:\SAMSUNG\SSCDROM.SYS /D:SSCD000 /v
lastdrive=g
Should the /D:SSCD000 be E if I have two hard drives?
What do you mean when you say the last drive should be g?
Could you write what should be in my config.sys file?

Change it to:

DEVICE=C:\SAMSUNG\SSCDROM.SYS /D:SSCD000 /E
lastdrive=g

The D:SSCD000 stands for DRIVERNAME or soemthing, it's not the drive letter. the /E is.

You do not need to designate the drive letter for the CDROM, in DOS it will assign the next available drive letter. The line lastdrive= specifies how many drive letter should be available.

As above states is the way to force a drive letter assignment.

In reply to how to write the lines have already done so. Maybe you ought to read thru:

so you can understand what we are trying to inform you..
