I have a 486 IBM clone. MS-DOS 6.22, Win 3.1 with the Win95 Upgrade.
Originally the Error messages said, Missing File C:\windows\system\VMM32\VNETBIOS.VXD and VTDAPI.386 C:\windows\system\VMM32\pagefile.VXD and C:\windows\system\VMM32\BlockDEV.VXD
"Invalid VXD dynamic Link call from NWREDIR(07) + 00000BC8 to device "o487." service 1"
"Your windows configuration is invalid. Run Win Setup program again to correct problem."
"EMM386 detect error #1 in an application at memory address 0048:647D"
[Don't know what any of that means, but think starting from scratch is answer]
At this point I had applications in safe mode. I started to install WIN 3.1 (on floppy disks, at DOS level) and received the following error message.
"Setup could not install it's XMS memory manager. Setup cannot successfully install WIN 3.1 without a compatible XMS memory manager. See your hardware."
Currently, I get WIN95 page logo, followed by DOS window stating:
"Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application. The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file try reinstalling that application to replace the missing the file." C:\WINDOWS\system\VMM32\vnetbios.VXD
Pressing continue I get, the same error messages as above, then "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer."
On restart I get the Microsoft Windows 95 Menu (in safe mode), the WIN95 logo window, the Menu again (in safe mode), a green screen (empty desktop/no icons(?)w/safe mode noted),and then a "Windows Setup tab" in center of screen(Options & Help). Options has (change system settings/Setup Applications/Add/remove windows components/Exit).
On the Change Systems Settings (choices): Trident 9420 PCI, Keyboard, Mouse, No Network installed.
On Setup applications: An error message "Setup cannot find APPS.INF from your Windows 3.1 disks. See your windows 3.1 documentation for information about copying windows files directly to your computer."
On Windows Setup: A list of components to Add/Remove check boxes: Readme files (None), Accessories (files), Games (files), Screen saver (files), and Wallpaper (files). It says currently used disk space 1,305,631 Bytes, and total available 271,908,864 bytes. [I added another card to mother board]
It appears to me that I have already lost everything (Word Perfect/Zip/ect.). What is not installed (of current importance) are several "Help" files (Dr. Watson, File Manager Help, Help Utility, Notepad Help, Object packager help, PIF Editor Help, Program Manager Help, Registration Help, Windows Tutorial).
So that is where I am currently at. I have nothing I want to save. I saw the DOS article about "Uninstalling DOS" & made a copy on flopy disk of "Killhdd.Bat" with Debug.exe
Will running "Killhdd.Bat" also clear WIN 3.2 & 95 so I am starting out clean again??
I assume I enter DOS Command to execute the "killhdd.Bat" floppy? What would be the written command I would give DOS? A:\ RUN ?
Then I would reinstall DOS 6.22, WIN 3.1, and WIN95 Upgrade.
Thanks in advance for any help! "PLEASE" be specific, I am WIN Dummy & have their books to prove it!!

for starters,
use the dos 6.22 disk one
boot from that to a:
a:\format C:/s
that will wipe the drive.
then reboot,
start like this,
with that same dos disk one
a:\setup
that will install dos 6.22
then install the win 3.1
then the win 95 upgrade,
its the worst way in the world to get win95.
to many errors can occur.
good luck, kj

The "Luck" didn't work ;-)
I tried 6.22 DOS, Floppy Disk #1, with C:\>a:\format C:/s
I received the following message: "The following file is missing or corrupted C:\CDROMDRV\D011V110.SYS There is an error in your config.sys File on line 6 [I only need the CD for installing WIN95 or WIN98]
I tried again, C:\>a:\format C:/s Then the dos line stated, "Incorrect DOS Version."
Impossible!! I am looking at my 1996 invoice, states: MS DOS V6.22 & Windows 3.11. I also have the original floppy disks.1. Could it be DOS 6.22 was erased and there is an earlier version now operating, waiting to reinstall the DOS 6.22 How do I determine which version I have now?? {right after I bought it, it crashed, took back to dealer & he fixed it. He reloaded everything, I suspect he loaded a different version, maybe.]
2. When I first turn on the computer, isn't there an F key to hit to prompt the Command line into action?? It claims it is starting WIN95 (I see a WIN95 logo on next page), then a hefty run-around before I reach the window where the command prompt is at.
3. Should I try the uninstall Floppy disk a: killhdd.bat ? I guess if I can determine what DOS I have, maybe I can download it?
Thanks for help so far!!

BOOT FROM THE A: DRIVE with your Dos 6.22 boot disk then just sys C: this should eliminate DOS 7(Windows 95 from the harddrives MBR) then carry on as response two adviced.

I booted from A: Setup /I (from win dummies). That actually started installing 6.22 Unfortunately, I still have the win95 logo & startup that takes me around until I finally get the black DOS page (where Command Prompt is at).
I was unable to continue the install, as it asked for the path of where CPWIN386.CPL was at. I exited and found path to enter, but couldn't get back (yet) to the install window.
At Command prompt I get a message (as above);
"I received the following message: "The following file is missing or corrupted C:\CDROMDRV\D011V110.SYS There is an error in your config.sys File on line 6" [I only need the CD for installing WIN95 or WIN98]Now when I enter A:\> Setup /I I get the message "ERROR: Invalid command line argument --> /I" [That worked the 1st time!]
When I enter A:\> SETUP I get the following message; "To install MS-DOS, insert Setup Disk 1 in drive A and press CTRL+ALT+DEL. This will restart your computer and begin the Setup program. Or press Enter to return to your command prompt."
CTRL+ALT+DEL takes me back to 1st page, but hitting DEL does not give me command prompt to install setup program. Instead it moves onto AMIBIOS Setup where Setup choices & sub-choices are at. (4 Boxes) Setup, utility, security, default. After making choices you save & exit.
Brings you back to 1st page. DEL is ignored and WIN95 screen appears, then a DOS screen with a list of missing files. Finally I get a DOS screen, "WIN protection error. You need to restart you computer."
In any event, I can see that WIN95 is still there & I can't reinstall. That A: killhdd.bat is sounding better all the time. Here is the information on it. I made a copy on a Floppy disk.
http://www.computing.net/faq/contentdos/clearhd.html
Question:
Clearing the hardisk.
Answer:
"Save the file Killhdd.bat to a floppy boot disk with the program DEBUG.exe on it. Boot up with the floppy disk and run Killhdd.bat to remove all data on the 1st hard disk on your computer. You can edit the file to change which disk it will clear... This will remove everything from your disks, including the errors. Once you've done that, just reboot and use your hard drive as if it were brand new."Any ideas? It's late here, so will tinker tomorrow. Thanks!!

How do I force DOS to go to command prompt? At start up I am going from DOS 1st page, WIN95 page, the DOS Error list, to green page & getting Fatal exception Blue page to terminate.

OK, I used; "starters,
use the dos 6.22 disk one
boot from that to a:
a:\format C:/s
that will wipe the drive."My response from DOS is "Incorrect DOS Version." [Tech suppport after I bought it, reinstalled everything, possibly using wrong DOS version.]
I tried "ver" command. It shows WIN95 version 4.00.950]
I tried "setver" command. The list scrolls by to fast & can't see what DOS version I have. I see MODE_DOS.COM [Spacing] 7.00
I haven't kicked the puter out the window yet, but I am thinking about it :-)
What was your opinion to using the "Killhdd.Bat" floppy to clear the hard drive so a clean install can be made?? If so, what would be the command to execute it? Is the "DEBUG.EXE" program on the floppy also or does that have to be added from another source? Thanks!

I cannot uninstall Windows 95 to install Win 98 Second Edition. When I attempt to install Win98 2nd Ed., I get the message that there is already an operating system, but when I boot with the OS9009 to remove the existing OS, it will not do it. Please help!
