I'm dual booting DOS 6.2/Win XP Media Center on a homebuilt dual core AMD machine.
I like Win 3.1! It's a very, very fast! But I've noticed 2 things: Windows must be started from the C prompt, and Windows dumps me back to the C prompt when it's finished.
I managed to have Windows automatically start without me having to type WIN, but I can't get it to completely shut off the PSU. Which means that I've got to bend down and hold the power switch for a mind-boggling 8 seconds! lol
Anyone of you 3.1 gods and goddesses know how to get 3.1 to completely power down a puter?

When 6.22 was made there were no software controlled power supplies. So probably not.
BTW, yeah I'll bet it's quick on that box. Didn't run too bad on a 486-DX50.
LOL
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

Search Google fot the utility ATXOFF, it is a DOS program to shut down PC's which support the ATX/ACPI standard.

i don't know whether this will work on your system, but its worth a try
http://www.opus.co.tt/dave/shut12.zip
read the the text file included for details.
after putting shutdown.com (contained in the zip file) in your windows directory
you could modify your autoexec.bat so that the last two lines are
c:\windows\win
c:\windows\shutdown.com -s
the one before the last line will start win 3.1
as soon as you exit windows, the next line will be executed, which will shutdown the machine
truth is stranger than fiction

Thanks for the replies.
Abdul, I tried the program, and it doesn't seem to work properly. I'm probably not doing something right; instead of shutting down, it completely freezes.

franki,
I tried the atxoff.com file and get the same thing. It just freezes. The mouse completely stops responding, and I hear a barely audible high pitched squeal coming from my box. (weird...)
I think it's trying to shut off, but something isn't clicking. When I shut down the PC under Windows XP, I hear the same squeal, but only for a second, and then it clicks off.
Oh, btw, my mobo uses ATX 2.0 and a 24-pin plug/PSU. Could this be the problem?
Thanks for posting.

If all else fails, you could connect the system to a power strip and turn it on/off with that.
If you want to go all the way, you could connect it to a X10 unit and turn it on/off with a remote switch. I use X10 for my sytems.
Sorry, I do not check for private messages
