Often the driver disk contains some installation program. In DOS mode type

a:

and then

dir *.exe

If there is for example install.exe then type

install

Follow instructions. If your disk contains only the CD-ROM Driver, it is different story. I will back soon...

...Back again. Copy the driver for your CD-ROM and the file "mscdex.exe" to "c:\windows\command".

File "c:\config.sys" should have the lines: "DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\XXXXXXX /D:CD001"
and
"LASTDRIVE=Z"
where XXXXXXX is the name of your CD-ROM Driver.

File "c:\autoexec.bat" should have the line:
"C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:CD001"

CD001 could be whatever you like but must be the same in both files.

How to modify autoexec.bat and config.sys?
In DOS c:\ type:

edit config.sys

If you don't have DOS Mouse, to exit and save, press "Alt" and use arrows to choose "exit" (or type "x").

Please note that there is blank space between MSCDEX.EXE and /D:CD001

There is no space between DEVICE=C:\ and \WINDOWS\COMM...

Why is this so hard for some people? I have done this over & over with no problems. If you bought the cd-rom new there is an installation diskette that comes with it. All I did at the a: prompt was typed INSTALL. Everything was set automatically. Then it asked me to reboot & BRAVO, Cd-rom was recognized. Case closed.

C:\>dir
make sure you have OAKCDROM.SYS and MSCDDEX.EXE

edit config.sys
should have these lines somewhere
DEVICE=C:\CDROM\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:NAME
LASTDRIVE=Z

edit autoexec.bat
should have
C:\CDROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:NAME /L:G(last drive, your CDROM should be G:)
PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\CDROM;C:\MOUSE

Save and reboot your computer. Good luck
