Maybe the WINFILE.INI file in the Windows folder has the read-only attribute set.

File Manager -> Options -> 'Save Settings on Exit'?

We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

Instead of using the Save Settings option , a better way to do this is to hold down the Shift key and double click the control button. This updates the settings so that next time you enter file manager it will come up the same. If you leave the save settings option turned on, then every time you enter file manager you will come up different which can cause problems as well as confusion.

One possible nasty problem:

If you do a search then open another window, then close the origional window. then exit: you cannot ever get back to a normal file manager window: you must edit the winfile.ini file by rem-ing out the default window to force file manager to use a new default. This problem only occurs if save settings on exit is turned on.

This bug hurts bad when it bites.

Best
