If you can get this combination
to work, please tell me how.
With a 760c tp, the PC Card Director
recognizes that the modem card is
inserted in slot 1 or 2, but the
status icon never gets to "ready".

What type of PCMCIA modem you have?

I have the combination Thinkpad 770 with IBM/Psion Gold International Modem with GSM v.34/56k6 (I dont use the GSM part because I dont have cables for it).

On the IBM website there are 2 drivers:
A DOS driver (RENA.EXE), which loads from your AUTOEXEC.BAT and the CardSoft PCMCIA Wizzard.

The DOS driver works perfectly well, but takes up some DOS memory below 1 Megabyte.
With the Cardsoft software I also had problems......

In Windows 9x it all works well and takes less time to configure, so maybe this is an option for your Thinkpad too (although my specs are Pentium 233 MMX with 160 Mb RAM ;-).

Is the modem in working order? What type?

Yes, I have another machine,760xd, with
win98 and it works fine there.

The modem is an IBM PCMCIA 33.6

There is very little support for the
700 TP's and Win 3.1 on the IBM website.
I am fairly sure I have the correct
drivers.
I am not able to find CardWizard for
3.1 on the web.
Thanks for the response.
John

I have a 760c that I maintain for one of my clients and it has a built in modem packaged with the mwave software. Maybe you have to disable that modem first before you can get it to recognize any other modems you installed.

For the 760 CardWizzard software look here:

http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=GCOR-3AJE7D

Also try the 770 software here:

The remark about other machines should be ignored I think, since you paid good money for your 760 and if the first doesn´t work you may use the second. I think I will try the 760 version myself too.

You can also try to locate the DOS (RENA.EXE) software, because I cant find that location quickly myself.

The 760c users guide, page 212, mentions the
Mwave modem. I have not tried it yet or
looked for drivers, just thought Pcmcia would
be faster.

It also says that to use a PC Card modem, you
must release a Com port by disabling the Infrared device, telephony function in the DSP section and changing the Com from 2 to 1.
I can find no way to do this. I have downloaded the 760c Utility features (I am
told this would accomplish the above) but
am having trouble installing it. I suspect my
problems are Com port/Irq related.

Thanks for the input. I will check out
CardWizard.

John

Got it to work! The key is page 212 in the
760C users guide. You must first disable
IR (infrared) and DSP. I did this with
file UTTP1W31, IBM Thinkpad Utility for
Windows 3.1 and then the normal things in 3.1. The windows version of the utility would not load but the DOS version worked.

I used the mwave modem built into the sound utility and it does work. My client hadn't planned on using it but I wanted to make sure it worked just in case. I also have a 760ED and it uses the same program and I have had it online with the built in modem. You don't have to look for drivers or install it or anything. When you install the mwave utility it is already built into it.

Terri,
Do you what the Mwave
utility is called on
the IBM website? I
may try it also.

There are a couple of pages that have all the drivers/software on them for the 760 series.
Here are the best ones:
The second link listed is the actual mwave files you will need.
