You have a couple of options. First, if you are using a dial-up modem service simply download MSIE 3.03 Full. It comes with a TCP\IP stack and dialer. Boy, that version of IE getting hard to find. You could also download MSIE 5.01 though most long-time Win 3x users, including myself, will tell you that IE 5 is pretty hard of the desktop resources and although IE 3.03 lacks some of the features of IE 5, it is by far the most stable.

If you are using a cable\DSL service you should download and installTCP-IP-32 for WfWG 3.11 3.11b and then MSIE 3.03 or MSIE 5.01

Don't use the MS TCP 32 for Win311 it is designed for proper Lan networks, instead see if you can get a copy of IE for 16 bit, as it will include the necessary tcp/ip software and phone dialer as well as IE and OE. I have never been able to get version 4.0 to collect email without hanging although I do recall getting a copy of IE5 16bit on the ms 2000 resource cd (which is free btw) and that worked fine.

You will need a fast 486, maths co processor, 1MB VRAM and at least 16 MB Ram to get the thing running. It will not work with less than a DX2/66

Here are the 3 Microsoft Direct Download URLs for 16bit Internet Explorer. All have TCP\IP Stack and Dialer, Select the one that best matchs your PC setup:

The E-mail client for IE 3.03 isn't y2k
compliant. Do a custom install & don't
install it. Only install the browser
& the winsoc k & dialer. Don't install the java either. It doesn't work.

Another resource is the Windows 3.1 download pages at Tucows:

http://classic.tucows.com/win3xsoft.html

Click open the "internet tools" menu page and see what they have to offer.

It won't work on less then 486DX2-66? Uh-oh, It's running on my DX2-50. I find that IE4 is the best comprimise, it works decent on a 486(both win3.1 and 95) and gives you most features of IE5

The e-mail client to IE 3.03 SP1 isn't y2k
compliant. The Microsoft link hasn't worked
in months. Before you post, check the
information first.

TechGUY is correct, the ie3 link that Mick C gave you IS y2k compliant and the JAVA works very well too. I downloaded it about a month ago and haven't had a problem with it since. I just tested the link and it works fine. Just make sure to select the Full install in the drop down menu. Here's that link again:

Thank you Lightspeed! I tested the links before I posted them. As to being Y2K compliant, I did not say it was, even when I was aware of the fact. Microsoft to give them some credit DID check IE and versions from 3.03 SR1 are reported as OK. The problem is that some download sites still have IE 3.0 to 3.03 (First Release) The above links are the same ones I use on my PowerLoad Site, and yes Microsoft do chop and change URLs more than need be. They also delete good utilities for no reason, Its not as if they need the space!

Mick, i think Microsoft doesn't want to make their old OS too good for fear people won't buy the new ones LOL! And you're right, they keep jerking us around for no apparent reasons, URL wise!

And thats why I started my PowerLoad Resource Pages in the first place, I was fed up of looking for the damn drivers. Now I access my own site from my trusty old Compaq Contura and PCMCIA Modem when I am out and about, At home I have Old TechNET CDs to fall back on as well! PowerLoad has grown since I started it as my personal download site!

Microsoft is screwed they keep on supporting stuff then don't offer it for download or to buy it how are you supposed to get it? All they are in for is the money on new O/S and stuff Win95 is exactly the same as Win98. and for Internet Explorer I HAVE IT WORKING ON A 386 4 ram 100.mb hardrive version 4.0 and by far it is the best the only times it doesn't work is when i have a slave drive installed.
